  • Thoughts on the US Supreme Court Taking on Gay Marriage

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been patiently waiting for the Supreme Court to take up the issue of gay marriage. I may have even been impatient about it, especially after the Federal Appeals Court ruled in favor of Michigan’s ban on gay marriage as well as the ban from a couple of other states. Honestly, I wholeheartedly believe the judge ruled the way he did so that it would force the Supreme Court’s hand. If my belief holds true, I also admit to being extremely annoyed with this judge because I live in Michigan and his decision is causing us hardship. On the other hand, if my…

His name being so associated with conservative activism, it's easy to forget that Roy Moore is actually the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. And here is his latest transgression: In a letter to Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Moore details what he calls “legitimate concerns” about whether the federal courts have the authority to consider the constitutionality of Alabama’s marriage laws — asking the governor not to enforce the ruling. Citing the Bible and an 1825 letter from Thomas Jefferson, Moore declares, “Our State Constitution and our morality are under attack by a…

Rep. Todd, who made the statement over the weekend on Facebook, later told the TimesDaily: "It is pretty well-known that we have people in [the state capital] Montgomery who…

I’m a human being before I am a writer; and a writer before I am a blogger, and although it’s been a joy and a privilege to have helped pioneer a genuinely new form of writing, I yearn for other, older forms. That is, they aren’t made with the same kind of nitrites as back in the day. The existence of “Plan C,” a Cold War plan to be carried out in the event of a nuclear attack, has been publicly known since 1956. There would be a “general mobilization” if an attack occurred but not on the United States itself. But documents obtained by Muck Rock provide a fuller picture of how the top secret strategy may have been implemented if World War III had erupted. An April 17, 1956, memo from Alan Belmont, who at the time was assistant director of the FBI’s Domestic Intelligence Division, summarized what the Bureau would do in the event of an…

  • Muslim Woman Sues Police For Forcing Her To Remove Hijab

    Peter Van Buren
    28 Jan 2015 | 9:00 am
The Dearborn, Michigan area is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States, so this can’t be blamed on some small-town cops ignorant of the law. Of course, since that “law” is actually the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantee of freedom of religion, even that is not much of an excuse. So we’re left with the “What were they thinking?” defense. A Muslim woman who was forced to remove her hijab by police in Michigan claims her religious rights were violated. She filed a civil rights lawsuit demanding the policy change.

Roy Moore, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and longtime conservative activist, is certainly enjoying a few minutes of notoriety from his latest publicity stunt. If you haven't heard, that's the one where he's insisting that Alabama government can simply ignore federal court rulings that strike down the state's marriage ban as unconstitutional. Most legal scholars are dismissing the PR act for what it is, and some groups are even pursuing ethics charges against Moore. For his part, Moore is reaching out to fellow anti-gay activists like Tony Perkins. Here's an interview from this…

  • Mitt Romney wants to run on his religion in 2016. Please do.

In an apparent run-up to a third presidential bid, the Washington Post reported yesterday that Mitt Romney will likely feature his Mormon faith far more in 2016 than he did in his previous two presidential runs. Romney has generally avoided discussing his Mormon faith for fear of it being used to attack him. As there’s a debate within the Evangelical community as to whether Mormons are really Christians — many Evangelicals don’t think Catholics are Christians, so imagine their opinion of Mormons — and as the Mormon church has embraced extreme social…

It was out of boredom, and a touch of morbid curiosity, that I clicked on the link a friend shared for a two bedroom $895,000 condo in San Francisco’s Castro district. Just when it seemed that SF real estate speculators couldn’t get any more surreal, this one actually left me clutching my pearls. For longtime residents, San Francisco is a city in crisis. Speculators have exploited the Ellis Act, and tens of thousands have been evicted in recent years. (More than a couple have committed suicide as a result.) And in my opinion, this real estate announcement deserves special…
  • Sitting can be deadly, even if you exercise regularly

    Dr. Mark Thoma, MD

Canadian research suggests that too much sitting can be deadly. People who are sedentary, either at work, at home or both are more likely to develop certain diseases (like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer) or even die. This increased risk of morbidity and mortality persists, even in people who exercise regularly. The risk is highest for those who get no regular exercise. People who have sedentary jobs, even those who exercise for an hour or more multiple times per week, still have a higher risk for developing these illnesses or even dying prematurely. The World Health…

Mary Cheney, the openly-gay daughter of former Bush administration Vice President Dick Cheney, gave an interesting talk at DC’s American University the other day. While it was cute that Cheney referred to herself as “Darth Vader’s daughter,” the substance of the discussion was actually quite interesting. Mary talked about marriage equality (aka “gay marriage), and her belief that the Republican party might finally embrace gay marriage by the year 2020 or 2028. Mary also seemed to signal that she’s still on the outs with her conservative sister Liz, who ran…

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, says the city is planning on suing Fox News. The charge? Lying about France in general, and Paris in particular, by claiming it is filled with Muslim-inhabited “no-go zones” so dangerous that “real” Frenchmen dare not tread. Except that, as I reported the other day, it’s not true. I lived in one of Fox News’ Muslim “no-go zones” in Paris for a few months back in 2009. 28 Jan 2015 | 5:00 am
What if all the best scholarly research about children with lesbian or gay parents was gathered into a single online portal? The “What We Know” project has done just that, and will likely become a key reference for policymakers, journalists, researchers, and the public. The project, housed at Columbia Law School, is intended to inform people about expert consensus on controversial public policy issues. Described by its founders as “part online library, part communications outreach tool,” its first phase focuses on LGBT equality, starting with the well-being…
  • Is Queer-Inclusive Similac Ad Still Exclusive?

    Dana
    27 Jan 2015 | 5:02 am
On the face of it, Similac’s new ad, “The Mother ‘Hood,” is one of the most queer-inclusive ads I’ve seen recently, with both two-dad and two-mom families, including women who are rocking a clearly queer aesthetic. But does it exclude as well? In the ad, various contingents of moms converge on a playground. There are breastfeeding moms, bottle-feeding moms, attachment parents, working parents, and stay-at-home moms, as well as the aforementioned queer gals. There’s also a group of dads, including a two-dad family, with their kids. Trash-talking…
  • Lesléa Newman’s Journey Through her Mother’s Cancer

    26 Jan 2015 | 5:01 am
Sometimes, a book comes along at just the right time. My mother was diagnosed with lung, bone, and brain cancer on December 23, just days after I received a copy of Lesléa Newman’s new book of poetry about her own journey through her mother’s illness and death from cancer. Newman, best known for her classic children’s book Heather Has Two Mommies, takes us from diagnosis to yahrzeit—the Jewish memorial a year after death—with an unflinching yet compassionate eye. Newman’s poems are a raw reminder of the sometimes complicated bonds between parents and their grown children. They…
  • Can “One Million Kids for Equality” Make a Difference?

    23 Jan 2015 | 5:46 am
A new campaign launched yesterday with the goal of engaging one million kids—whether LGBTQ, children of LGBTQ parents, or allies—in advance of this summer’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality. The campaign, One Million Kids For Equality, in coalition with The Personal Stories Project and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Rainbow Center, has launched a temporary website, Facebook page and Twitter account, and promises more in the weeks to come. It explains on the website: We each have a story. Many of us were bullied in school for being different, some of us have…

Not the exact model we’re getting, but close. Photo credit: PunkToad under a CC by 2.0 license. Camping in a trailer? Too decadent for my tastes—but I have a persistent spouse. My spouse Helen and I love to camp. In fact, one of my earliest memories of our relationship is camping in Door County, Wisconsin, shortly after we met in grad school. We used a tiny two-person tent, which was appropriate both for our incomes and the fact that we were in the early stages of our relationship. Ahem. We upgraded to a four-person model to accommodate ourselves and our son, and that’s…

We have just spent two weekends binge-watching  The Fall, a terrific British miniseries and its sequel starring Gillian Anderson (X Files) and Jamie Dornan (50 Shades Of Grey). John Carney, the writer and director of 2006's Oscar-winning Once, which I loved, has again put music at the centre of a 'little' movie.       By: Erika Star It’s that time of year again, we’re on the cusp of a new year and it seems that the general consensus in regards to 2014 is GTFO. It’s been a rough year, filled with loss, a polar vortex and more heartbreak than anyone should care to shake a stick at. All was not lost however, Pharrell was Happy and I tried patchouli deodorant for the first time. Also, in semi-unrelated new, for the first time in history the majority of Americans are now living in states that allow gay marriage. That is 35 states and the District of Columbia to be exact, and while I’m still…

Wow, it’s 2015. What an exciting and busy year 2014 had been. In 2014 my business had become large enough to support myself on just that. I was able to quit my job working at the hotel. I am very happy and feel extremely blessed to have grown my business to this point. There have been some hiccups along the way though, especially with managing my time. I have not done the best at this, but will be focusing on improving managing my time better this year. I plan to write at least 1 post a month on my blog, which as you can tell I neglected last year. I was at DragonCon last year and a good friend and his boyfriend picked me up one morning to take me out to breakfast. I’ve known this friend for 5 or 6 years now and he’s the sweetest guy. He just happens to have some road rage. He’s also Filipino. I bring that last bit up because anytime I’ve ever driven with someone from the Philippines and they’re in the driver’s seat, they exhibit some serious road rage. It occurred to me to Google it and find out if it was perhaps a national pastime there. Suffice to say I’ll never be able to get into a vehicle with him again without the…

That meant we had a few moments throughout the time we spent together when he was also genuinely affectionate. I do enjoy when he’s medicated and have suggested he medicate more often. His responses may have been slightly sarcastic. In any case, part of our conversations during that time found us looking back at our first…

I’ve found the pamphlets and looked over the cost projections with potential overruns for any serious behavioral issues. Inspiration helps fuel us to dig deep and discover our own voice…or we copy that other author and get labeled as a bit of a hack. It happens. The majority of us, though, find our own voice. I grew up reading Stephen King, Anne McCaffrey, and Anne Rice. Horror and science fiction…and I somehow ended up writing comedy. Go figure. Lamia Beard was just 30 years old. Her body was found Saturday morning, January 17. Her life and death were shown further disregard by police & media misgendering as well as victim blaming. What are the things you need to do within 30 minutes of waking up to ensure your day gets off on the right foot? What happened the last time you didn’t do one of these things? Forgive me, but I need something a bit light for a topic. This seems well-suited a blog prompt. As […]

    A Summer Full Of Peaches

  • Introducing the capsule wardrobe

    Carley
    8 Jan 2015 | 12:00 am
When you enter my space in the hall where I live, it’s impossible not to notice my abundance of clothes. Between the huge antique-style wardrobe, chest of drawers and my overfull and never empty laundry basket, clothes are a big part of my life. But when I realised that I had given away / donated four big bags of clothes last year and yet I still had too many, I figured something needed to change. Enter the capsule wardrobe. I first came across the idea of a capsule wardrobe via … Continue reading →
  • Saying goodbye to 2014

    Carley
    6 Jan 2015 | 10:21 am
I can’t pretend that I am anything but glad that 2014 is over. Whilst there were a number of good things that happened through the year, my memory has been coloured by my brother’s diagnosis and subsequent brain surgery. I wanted this post to be a recap of the year to remind me that there were good times as well as difficult ones. Last January I moved back to St Andrews, the little town I studied in for four years which still holds a piece of my heart. I spent a … Continue reading →
  • When is a stomach virus not a virus? When it’s a brain tumour.

    Carley
    26 Nov 2014 | 7:21 am
As a joke, it’s not very funny, right? It’s even less funny when it’s real life. Today marks a momentous day; the end of three months of anxiety, of crossed-fingers and desperate prayers. It marks the end (hopefully) of three years of phone calls from my mum, worried and baffled. It’s the day I finally manage to write out the words which have been petrifying my family for the last 71 days. My brother has a brain tumour.  The last two and a half months have been the hardest of my … Continue reading →
  • Gratitude, lately

    Carley
    23 Oct 2014 | 10:23 am
If this year has taught me anything, it is that you should never be too busy to stop, take a breath and just appreciate all you have in your life. These are just a handful of the things I am grateful for right now. I know it’s not quite thanksgiving yet, but anything you guys are particularly grateful for, this month? Carley

    21 Oct 2014 | 8:51 am
In my last post, I suggested that there might be more than one reason that I’ve been reluctant to blog recently. It’s something that’s been bothering me for a while, and more than that, something which has felt like an unbreachable wall between myself and some of the people that I’d normally go to with my concerns. I know that quite often, confronting fear is the only way to combat it’s power, and so I’m nervously tapping these words into a screen. I’ve been putting off blogging about my life … Continue reading →

If you happen to be putting on 1991’s Untitled (Go-Go Dancing Platform) by late gay Cuban artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres, you might find yourself in one of Silverlake’s gay hotspots. 28 Jan 2015 | 12:49 am
No struggle, no progress, right?First off, I just want to say sorry for not posting like I should. One word, depression. You know what, this depression thing is really debilitating, and it's interfering with my journey, but it's the road I chose to take.I'll keep it brief. I've been in my feelings lately. Here are some reasons why:I'm damn near poor.I feel like nothing is happening for me, my blog, or my goals.I'm realizing that my bluntness can come off harshly, and when I'm called out on it, I feel like an asshole. I don't ever want to be an asshole, but I guess I have to accept that I'm an…

  • The Worst Thing about a Breakup

    Kevin T
    5 Jan 2015 | 12:55 pm
The worst thing about a break up is the coping phase you go through once it's all over.Your normal couple routine no longer exists, and you're nowhere near ready to look for a new love, although some may try.Although hard to do, I find it best to keep busy doing something productive, especially on those days where you would've spent most of the time with your ex.I feel the hardest thing for me is accepting that I'm no longer someone's priority, love interest.  I'm back with myself again with no buffer to help past those lonely days. And, at times, I still feel some type of entitlement to…

Next week I'll be turning 28 years old.Although everyone celebrates the new year on Jan 1st, I think of it as a precursor to my official new year, which is my birthday, Jan 11th.Sometime between Jan 1st and Jan 10th, just to get an idea of the things I need to improve to make my new year more special than the last, I take time out to sit back and take stock of my life so far.Looking back over last year, I made a lot of moves and a lot of mistakes. Conversely, I had more good times than bad times, too. Although I have lost some money, left my job, and ended my relationship, in between those…

Zoe and her GF on the trail at Lake Poway. BY ZOE AMOS Lesbian.com Still haven’t decided on your new year’s resolutions? You’re not the only one. Besides, there’s no point in making them just to follow the half of us that do. A blase attitude about your resolution means you’ll probably fall into the sad majority (66 to 92 percent depending on the source) of those who fail to keep them. Reasons for not following through vary. Bottom line? When you’re not passionate about change, follow through lags and other motivations lead you astray. On the other hand, those who are passionate…

This global adoration for Disney’s latest effort could be due to the impressive animation, lovable…
  • Girlfriend decoder ring: What does LOL really mean?

    shannon
    26 Jan 2015 | 5:33 am
BY NATASIA LANGFELDER Lesbian.com Women are complicated. Sometimes you need a decoder ring to figure out what the words they are saying actually mean. And when you’re talking about a lez relationship, it’s twice as hard. Which is why I’m going to help you decode what your crush/potential girlfriend is saying when she types “LOL.” Let’s face it, most of us aren’t laughing out loud when we type it, especially not to a lady we might be into. WHEN LOL MEANS “I’M FLIRTING WITH YOU” I said “hi” and she said “hi, LOL” — wtf does that mean? Between text…

BY NATASIA LANGFELDER Lesbian.com If you have been on the internet in the past week, you have probably come across pictures of “Twilight” Star Kristen Stewart with Alicia Cargile. The two women are probably in a relationship, but the internet is referring to the two as “gal pals” incessantly. “Gal Pals” as a phrase invokes the image of two wholesome young ladies from the 1950s on their way to a dance to meet some men. It’s heterocentric and desexualizing. It’s reminiscent of the popular memes, “Some eCards” that circulate on Facebook all the time, depicting people…

  • Nova Scotia law society can’t bar TWU grads, judge rules

The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society (NSBS) does not have the authority to deny future graduates of Trinity Western University’s (TWU) proposed law school the possibility of articling in the province, a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge ruled Jan 28.While the BC-based Christian university is pleased with the ruling, gay lawyers are disappointed and law societies across Canada — especially in Ontario and BC that are also facing TWU lawsuits — are mulling the decision. At the heart of the case is TWU’s community covenant, a document all students must sign that…

Rough House at Club120: Sunday, 2:40pmCrossing Church Street at Richmond, on my way to Club120, I pass a straight couple who have just run a marathon. I know this because they are still wearing their bibs and holding hands, chatting and laughing — such a different life from mine. I wonder what they would think if they knew I was going to a dungeon party just down the street from where they are standing. I admire the contrast on this beautiful sunny day: inside the club, red lights flood the floors and paint the walls. Men roam around in leather gear, exposing skin, some in jockstraps or…
