What to say, really? Another GOP-led legislature in another red state has passed a measure that the far-right hopes will help them discriminate against same-sex couples who seek their services: Indiana's governor signs bill allowing businesses to reject gay customers [CNN] Supporters of the license-to-discriminate bill, including the conservative governor who might run for president in '16, are pretending like this push is benign and that the time is coincidental. Bullsh*t. Indiana does not protect LGBT people from discrimination, and this is a naked attempt to keep it that way (and chip away…

Here she is, our new little girl who entered the world just 24 hours ago. She weighed in at 7lbs and 4oz and is 19.5 inches long. Truly a blessing in our lives and an experience to never forget. As a dad at times like this, it is hard to imagine what life will be like in one, two or five years. Heck, it is hard to imagine what life will be like in a week. Will our oldest take her in and care for her, or will she resent her and want nothing to do with her? There are a million questions one can ask. My only hope is that they both grow up to live their lives to the fullest, and love their dad!!!

Sometimes we scoff when folks call themselves allies. Like, anyone can say they support us, but how about you show us instead, eh? But the concept of an ally, and building allies, is always invaluable. The minority will always need the majority to come to their side for real, lasting change to occur. But, as happens all too often, one minority group ends up fighting with another minority group for progress/approval/support. And that’s just ridiculous. Also, just as ridiculous, is when people who belong to multiple minority groups are asked to choose which one takes precedence over the…

The study was fairly straightforward: the researchers looked at the number of times people Googled “register to vote,” along with a few other related queries, during the weeks leading up to Election Day in 2012. They then compared those searches to data on when and how many people actually registered to vote, finding that “daily web search volume…
  • Indiana legalizes “straights only” economic discrimination

    Jon Green
    27 Mar 2015 | 5:00 am
Yesterday, Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed a purportedly anti-discrimination bill into law that legalizes discrimination against LGBT consumers. Senate Bill 101, also known as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, prohibits the government from unnecessarily burdening anyone’s ability to exercise their religious beliefs. Seemingly forgetting that this protection already exists, as established under the First Amendment, the bill can be more accurately described as establishing a “right to discriminate” in Indiana — one in which businesses can refuse service to LGBT…
  • Republicans are trying to legally rig elections: Ohio Edition

    Sam Whipple
    26 Mar 2015 | 9:00 am
By now, Americans no strangers to the variety of inventive and ill-conceived ways that Republican state legislators have found to build barriers to the ballot box. AMERICAblog readers already know about the attempt to tweak the rules for electoral votes in Michigan and Nebraska, along with poll taxes in North Carolina and voter ID laws in around the country — laws that have altered electoral outcomes in Mississippi and Virginia. But now Ohio Republicans are pushing a new kind of voter suppression – one specifically targeting students in the Buckeye State. Late last week (and…
  • Anti-herpes drug to treat HIV?

    Dr. Mark Thoma, MD
    26 Mar 2015 | 7:00 am
Research is continuing to discover new drugs to help in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The research isn’t just for drugs; it’s also for vaccines and some other techniques to try to prevent the transmission of and, finally, cure AIDS. Valacyclovir is a drug primarily used to treat people infected with Herpes Simplex virus (HSV). It has also been used to treat patients with chickenpox, patients infected with Epstein-Barr virus and to prevent cytomegalovirus infections. It’s been available to use for quite some time and often works well to treat people with HSV infections like genital herpes,…

    26 Mar 2015 | 5:00 am
As Hillary Clinton begins to run into friction in her next attempt to win the presidency, Democrats are — to differing degrees — losing enthusiasm for the headlining race of 2016. At the same time, GOP candidates are facing any number of scandals-of-the-day, but Republican enthusiasm is as boisterous as ever. Why? It’s quite simple: Democrats have one serious contender for the presidency; Republicans have around a dozen possibilities. When a Republican candidate hits a snag, like Christie’s bridge-related problems, support shifts to other candidates like Jeb Bush and Scott…

  • Help Stop LGBTQ-Discrimination Bill in Indiana

    Dana
    26 Mar 2015 | 5:02 am
The Indiana legislature on Monday voted in favor of a “religious freedom” bill that is a thinly disguised attempt to allow anti-LGBTQ discrimination. Here’s how you can help stop it, wherever you live. Governor Mike Pence has said he will sign the legislation, reports the Indy Star. It would stop state and local governments from “substantially burdening” a person’s exercise of religion, except in cases of a “compelling governmental interest” and using the least restrictive means possible. As the Washington Post says, however,…

I asked him recently about the interplay among marriage equality, parental rights, and other issues that impact LGBT parents and our children, and about the past, present, and future of our movement. Early victories of LGBT parents in family courts “have helped us to think big.” The early victories of LGBT parents in family courts “have helped us to think big,” Wu said. He…

The Vanguard award is “presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality,” and Washington proved she was worthy of the honor. “I think some stuff needs to be said,” she told the audience, and then said it: History tells us that often we don’t [band together] … women, poor people, people of color, people with…

Two adults with same-sex parents last week publicly defended families like theirs against those who sought to disparage them—including two gay men and a woman with two moms. Sidney Switzer, who grew up with two moms, wrote at HuffPo in response to an article at The Federalist by Heather Barwick. Barwick, whose different-sex parents divorced before her mother began a relationship with another woman, had written that: By and large, the best and most successful family structure is one in which kids are being raised by both their mother and father. . . . Gay marriage doesn’t just…

Gayby Baby, a wonderful documentary from the perspective of children with same-sex parents, will be premiering this April. Watch the trailer here. Award-winning Australian filmmaker Maya Newell has lesbian moms, and turned her camera to the lives of four young people—Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham—who also grew up, or are growing up, with same-sex parents in Australia. It’s a lovely look at their very different lives, from their perspectives. I first reported on the film back in 2012, and am thrilled to see it finally get a full release as it premieres at the Hot Docs…

Have you ever seen a GREEN FLASH  at Sunset?  I heard about this for the first time last year in a movie that mentioned it. Green flashes and green rays are optical phenomena that sometimes occur right after sunset or right before sunrise. When the conditions are right, a green spot is visible above the upper rim of the disk of the sun. The green appearance usually lasts for no more than a second or two. Rarely, the green flash can resemble a green ray shooting up from the sunset (or sunrise) point. Green flashes occur because the atmosphere can cause the light from the sun to separate out…

In the wild wilderness called the Internet, the zillions of images that are available on a daily basis is staggering. Which is why briefmagazine.com arrives at the junction of time and lust; impossible to pin down, this simple walk through a daily appearance of a few images is more than what it seems. It would be easy to think its a compendium of stray images tossed into a mix, but upon closer inspection something is revealed. What or who that is…

Time is made most memorable of course through photography, thatquiet stealing of a moment, proposing truth, revealing a mystery andforever gaining dust. Time steals, this we know.

The Top 10 Porn Parodies Of All Time It is a truth universally acknowledged that if there is a movie or television show popular in mainstream culture, there’s also a parody porn version. Makes sense really; the porn industry in the United States produces tens of thousands of movies each year. Once you’ve done the “lonely housewife meets a horny plumber” schtick a few hundred times, original story material can seem a bit hard to come by. 10. Jersey Score The popular MTV reality show that followed the lives of some horny, tanned kids from Jersey on Spring Break has spawned a gay parody.

Although the show will end with a feature-film-length special, fans have already created a petition asking HBO to bring Looking back for a third season. The show averaged just around 240,000 total viewers with low ratings in the coveted 18 to 49 demographic, but its demise points to larger problems with the show (and pitfalls for future gay programming to avoid). Especially when, compared to last few years, there is a stark lack of diversity within this year’s nominees. Not that the Oscars are known for representing the 99%, but this year’s nominees skew…

I’ve made several comments over the years—and even last Monday—referring to my husband and little brother as being Chinese Vulcans. I do this because…well, it’s true. They are the logical intellectuals, are finicky, don’t often display emotions, are mildly annoyed when white people do, are seriously annoyed when proven wrong by their own methodologies, only mate properly once every seven years, and are endlessly amazed their husbands can remember to breathe on their own without being reminded. Above all else, though, they make me laugh. One of the best parts of writing a novel…

Some weeks are better than others. Last week wasn’t one of them. I think it was a combination of everything building up from three months of taking on too much and not giving myself a break. My thought process behind not giving myself a break is that if my mother can handle all the stress she has, especially with dad, then I should be able to handle everything thrown at me. It seemed like a sound strategy, but I was mistaken. Sorely mistaken. I noticed there was an issue last week when it felt like somebody was pushing on my front, somebody on my back, and then someone had me in an icy…

Because now that we can file jointly, it’s like he’s being acknowledged by the world—or at least the United States government—that he is supporting me. I think it makes him feel a little better knowing someone else sees it his way, too. It also doesn’t hurt that he now gets money back because of me instead of owing. That’s actually the source of his good mood during tax season. It’s been in filing jointly now that we’ve really taken a close look at what protections we do and…

Perception is a fickle thing. I perceive a great many bad movies from the 1980s as being very good, yet others have the exact opposite reaction. I perceive my husband’s Grandmonster to be the source of much evil in the world, only he loves her. Readers perceive authors as all getting along, yet we don’t. We perceive ourselves as likeable, and then someone comes forward and informs us we aren’t. I try to be and I know my fellow authors try to be, too, but we aren’t going to be able to please every perception out there and that can be a tough lesson to learn. Heck, I was unfriended on…

Obviously, the polite thing we’re taught to do is, if we respond at all, thank the reader for their feedback and say we hope they’ll like the next one better. That’s the PC way of us saying “We’ll think about it.” Ironically, the RWA (Romance Writers of America) took some heat this week for suggesting how authors should act in order…

This is important. A recent Gallup study of the 50 largest metropolitan cities in the United States found that Pittsburgh was ranked 49 thin terms of the size of our LGBT population. These results are based on responses to the question, “Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender?” — included in more […]

I just finished a day full of updating this web domain and giving it a fresher look. Between deciding what theme to choose and then tweaking it up, I am finally very happy with it all. It should be mobile-friendly and ready for micro formats more so than ever before. It had been over 4 years with the older theme so it was definitely time to do such. This one is easier on the eyes and I tied up broken links, updated content and all that jazz. Since Daylight Savings Time is now upon us, the sunshine is providing a longer day and more opportunities for progress and success. I’m using…

For anyone in the know, the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race premiering this Monday on Logo TV was filmed for almost a year ago! I know this current crop of drag starlets on Drag Race have been chomping at the bit to finally have what they already know has happened, happen for the rest of us diehard fans and newbies on the juggernaut reality competition reaching it’s 7th lap, err, cycle, ahem, season. The travel circuit has begun for all of the queens and for some of them the ride has just begun. I’ve tried to speak to a few of the Dolls from RuPaul’s Drag Race via…

Picture it. Las Vegas, Nevada. Last Christmas. Now granted that’s not so long ago but I never spilled the deal about our fabulous trip to Sin City during the festive holidays. To follow me here is to know that we love Vegas and Vegas loves us. We have stayed at The Cosmopolitan the last seven (!!!!!!!) times we’ve been to the neon marquee jungle of excess and recess for adults. We see ourselves at few other resorts. No other place compares to The Cosmo. Now, I should be spanked for sharing what happens in Vegas here but I can’t help myself. I’ve always been a rule…

With the increasing flow of news media today there’s many places you can find a wide range of statistically speaking official charts of top stories of 2014. I love that reflection we take of the year past and hopeful optimism of the one to come. Here at my domain I chose to remember those moments in my own gay pop culture lexicon and personal life to chart as the top moments that gave me life in 2014. And away we went… In a year where using the word “tranny” became taboo, it truly became the era of a strong transsexual presence in our public eye and keen awareness in…

Today is a chill day for me. It's raining, I'm sipping tea, and I'm anticipating the busy week ahead, so this day of chill is very necessary.Lately, I've been too self-conscious about my every action taken. I find myself wondering what people will think if I write about certain things or take too many selfies on my Instagram (FOLLOW). Myself and my blog are getting a tad bit more attention, and I'm over here worrying if I have the right image...of my OWN blog, that's just too much.I'm trying to live freer, and I have nothing to really lose, so I've just been exposing myself more and more, and…

Sometimes we need to take breaks from our everyday draining and negative struggles to celebrate the more positive aspects of the Black  LGBT experience. The video above captures the beauty of same gender love, and the story behind this video is quite endearing.About 2 years ago I received a message from Jeff Robertson, a young black ad executive from Houston, TX,  asking if I could post a video featuring his surprise marriage proposal to his now husband Jeremiah Pyant. Set in Quianta Roo, Mexico, on the beautiful beach of the El Dorado Royale Resort, we see Jeff (in the magenta…

My Facebook news feed never ceases to amaze me. Yet again, I happened upon a video shared by one of my associates, which features Dr. Umar Johnson allegedly "schooling *1*" an LGBT Feminist of color about the black struggle. Now, I have been stressing over this post since the evening I saw the video because I didn't know from which angle to analyze. Although I wanted this post to be perfect and scholarly, this post will not be perfect, but it will be as honest and in depth as possible. Before I go completely in, I want to make it clear that  even though I identify as part of the black…

It's been difficult to focus as of late. I'm running behind on several posts, and my personal life has been a mess of lost opportunities and mixed emotions.Recently, I recovered a memory of my childhood that I wish I could forget. There's not much I can do about it now, but my acceptance of it has been shaky.I often wonder why I still bother posting about my personal life. Exposure is overrated, at least, that's how I feel right now. Trust me, I appreciate everyone who reads this blog. No matter how many views I get, from 1 view to 88 views, I'm grateful. "Am I a bear?" This is the question I've been asking myself lately. Often when I look in the mirror after a nice shower or  when I'm brushing my teeth, I can't help but wonder if I indeed fit within a subculture that within itself has a slew of labels and discrimination to make anyone not part of that community feel less than adequate. For those who are unfamiliar with the term "Bear,it is just one of the many labels to describe a certain type of gay or bi male (cis or trans) within the gay community. Bears are described to be big, burly, muscular, rugged, masculine, and…

BY JENNIE MCNULTY Lesbian.com It might have been about a choice of bread for a sandwich, but, in the second episode of “Meals with Mary,” Mary Dolan offers the advice: “Choose wisely, love depends on it.” Mary Dolan is the 86-year-old, spicy, “former Vaudevillian legend” character created by the talented actor and comedian Petey Gibson. Mary Dolan is just like your grandmother, if your grandmother was a bawdry burlesque babe who may have slept with Bing Crosby. Gibson, as the delightfully impertinent Ms. Dolan, hosts a popular monthly variety night in Los Angeles and has started…

BY MIKI MARKOVICH Lesbian.com In August of 1990, I slowly drove my 1980 AMC Concord hundreds of miles north to begin my first year of college. Even though it had only second gear, I loved this car as it had not only provided shelter in the past, it also consistently got me from place to place, albeit slowly. Excited and scared to begin this new chapter, I followed the signs from Interstate 55 into the small Midwestern town. Finding a parking spot, I initiated the emergency brake and stepped out into the sunny day. As I looked around, trying to orient myself so I could move on the next task of…
  • Is NBC’s Lesbian Centered Comedy, “One Big Happy,” Worth Watching?

Image via wallwidehd.comBY NATASIA LANGFELDER Lesbian.com I really wanted to like Liz Feldman and Ellen DeGeneres’s latest sitcom, “One Big Happy.” The network television series stars the usually very funny Elisha Cuthbert as, Lizzy, a lesbian who is planning to start a family with her best friend, Luke. Lizzy and Luke (Nick Zano) have been best friends since high school. Pop culture usually portrays lesbians as man-haters, meanwhile, in real life most of us can relate to having a male bestie. “One Big Happy” also immediately establishes that the two main characters won’t be…

If that wasn’t bad enough, the song isn’t even actually gay. The song’s lyrics are from the perspective of a woman jealous over the other woman who took her man, but enraged listeners took the jealous obsession as too lesbian for their liking.
