Do you remember the raspberry patches that we scoured when we were children? Every summer, they would flourish under the reign of the northern latitude sun, and bespeckle the forest with red. The plump, delicious denizens were happy to indulge their patrons with the payment of potential reproduction. And yet, they strictly punished the vices of overindulgence, leaving us sanguine and beleaguered. When sun stretched into the far corner of the sky, I saw the light reflected in your eyes and wondered whether you could see it reflected within mine. The fading light brought the forest repose, and…

I just recently enjoyed writing again; it has been several years. As a gay writer (though not professionally), I used to create descriptive poems based on experiences of love and lust, perhaps because of the necessity for an outlet based on the oppressive pressures of society. However, as a married, stable man, I feel less pressure to document the subconscious tumult of troubled, youthful mind. I'm still trying to discover the personal purpose that writing has for me; there is definitely a cathartic, introspective component to it.

"It was nice to play someplace I'd never even been before," says Hemerlein, who opened for Lorde. "It's great to see new places opening in D.C." Lo-Fang (Photo by Grant Singer) Those aren't merely idle words from an itinerant musician, one who also expects next weekend "to see lots of familiar faces and hang out a little bit," adding for good measure: "I love D.C." In fact, the 30-year-old Hemerlein grew up outside…

Every inmate dance now. If by some chance yesterday you didn’t see the first full trailer for Season 2 of “Orange Is the New Black,” I envy you the momentary anticipation before you click the play button right now. If you have already watched it, multiple times, like me I don’t envy you the burning agony of knowing how far away June 6 is. Having viewed the clip many (many, many, many) times, I have a few key thoughts.1. Damn, Piper. Time in the SHU has left our girl a changed woman.2. Dayum, Vee.Hot damn, am I excited for a new badass to make things interesting.3. Aw, damn, Alex. So…

So, Lauren made it to the finals of the AfterEllen Hunger Games. It has been a long, long, crazy path. But, if you still have a few more voting clicks left in you, please send Zoie Palmer Army on to glorious victory. Why? Like you have to ask.Why Lauren? The real question is, why not Lauren? Dr. Lauren Lewis is a human in a Fae world. A doctor and an activist. A lover and a fighter. Also, don’t get me started on her incredibly Hotpants. She may not have the sheer brawn or the super powers or the sharp teeth as some of her now vanquished Hunger Games competitors. But she makes up all for it…

I remain convinces that Ellen Page came out so she could wear ties on the red carpet. KIDDING! It’s a joke. I love that tiny Canadian. Her coming out was a courageous personal choice and not a shallow sartorial choice. Also, she totally wore ties before, too. Like, a bunch. Really. Sure, not three ties in three consecutive public appearances. But, you know, still. Anyway. Since today is tax day in the U.S., I thought I’d make your day a little less tiring by showcasing some more of the Other Ellen in her favorite neckwear of later. Tatiana Maslany is back (back, back, back, back, back, back…and apparently back). When last we saw her (and all her incarnations) it was early June. That’s a long time to stew in the delicious clonespiracy. But what I hadn’t forgotten is how much I love Cosima. And, evil as it is on their parts, how much I care about her illness. Terribly brilliant, that move – with emphasis on the terrible part. Though if it means lots of scenes of Delphine nursing…

  • Let’s make Spanakopita, for a traditional Greek Easter

    John Aravosis
    20 Apr 2014 | 10:39 am
I’m at mom’s for Easter. Usually we call it “Greek Easter,” but as this year “our” Easter and “your” Easter are the same day, it’s just “Easter.” My sister typically holds the big family dinner, with a ridiculous(ly good and over-abundant) assortment of Greek food. I try to make something to bring every year, usually Pastitsio (my favorite), but as I didn’t get to Chicago until late Saturday afternoon, and Pastitsio is a royal pain (way too many pots and pans), I opted for something simple, Spanakopita. Spanakopita is…
  • SC mayor fires lesbian police chief, says rather have drunks than gays protecting children

Earl Bullard, the mayor of Latta, South Carolina, is in some hot water after firing the town’s openly-lesbian police chief, Crystal Moore, apparently because she’s gay. Latta was caught on tape disparaging gays, and suggesting that he’d rather have a drunk in charge of the safety of his children than someone who is gay. Here’s the transcript of what Bullard was caught saying. The actual audio is below. “I would much rather have.. and I will say this to anybody’s face… somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody…
  • The honey badger that could escape from any enclosure (video)

    John Aravosis
    18 Apr 2014 | 5:16 pm
This video about honey badgers from the BBC is fascinating. The animal worked with a mate to figure out how to unlock its cage door and get out. It kept getting out, she they built an outdoor enclosure for it with cement sides. No way in, no way out. The honey badger climbed a tree in the enclosure, got to the top, bent the branch over and jumped out. So they cut back the trees on the edges near the wall. What did it do next? The animal dug up rather large rocks, piled them in a corner, and then climbed on the rocks to get out. So they got rid of the rocks. A few nights later, the guy’s…
  • What happens when a woman asks random women for dates on the street (video)

    John Aravosis
    18 Apr 2014 | 11:30 am
I’d posted a video yesterday of a guy asking random men on the street for dates, while a friend filmed it, just to see how they’d react. Today, you get the female version, in which a cute young woman stops women at random and asks for their phone number. The guy version didn’t go badly, for the most part, but the woman version clearly went better. (Not that this is necessarily a representative sample of society at large.) I’m told this is in Santa Barbara, CA, but am not sure. I’m also not sure if there are any large lessons to be learned from this, but it is…

I’m very excited. My family and I got tickets to the White House Easter Egg Roll this year, so we’re heading down to D.C. this weekend for the chance to tumble ovoids around the president’s lawn. Will we actually get to meet the President or First Lady? They’re always at the event at some point, but the odds that they’ll be there during our time slot and that we’ll be in the right location among the crowd are slim. • How Gay Dads and Their Kids Triggered Administration Shift on Marriage Equality

    16 Apr 2014 | 12:34 pm
Two gay dads and their kids played a small but significant role in the evolution of President Obama and his administration on marriage equality. In “How the President Got to ‘I Do’ on Same-Sex Marriage,” a long but worthwhile article in the New York Times Magazine, investigative reporter Jo Becker explains that in April 2012, before the president or anyone in his administration had expressed public support for marriage equality, Vice President Joe Biden was at a gathering of gay Democrats at the home of HBO executive Michael Lombardo and his husband, architect Sonny Ward.

April 15 has come and gone, and even though many same-sex couples can now pay as “Married,” many others, especially parents, still do not get the family tax benefits of different-sex married couples. A new campaign from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force hopes to change that. “Queer Our Taxes” is asking the IRS to do two things: Make a new filing status, “File As Family,” that recognizes us as families and accepts joint filing returns from same-sex couples who are unmarried. Let us Claim our Kids: Create a new “Dependent for Tax Purposes“…

This includes the bathroom and the swimming pool and the long vacations to Grandma’s house in the summer. If the family is having hamburger’s for dinner, does Fido get his own little patty? Do the kids chase him and pet him and dress him up? Does his name get included on your family Christmas letter? Yep, he’s just part of the family. Now that How I Met Your Mother has ended its long run, Emmy winner and former Doogie Howser child star Neil Patrick Harris is headed back to Broadway as the lead in a revival of Hedwig And The Angry Inch.Harris will be wearing heels and fishnets in the play, and for the new Vanity Fair he is wearing a snake down his pants, as photographed by Annie Leibowitz.Clearly this guy is out to change his image… and he has enough talent to pretty much pull anything off (rumour has it he was a contender for Letterman's job). Over the last couple of weeks two of my favourite shows, Scandal and The Good Wife, have had surprise twists and killed off major characters… both were surprising and heartbreaking and great drama. And both created really valuable social media buzz for these already buzzy shows. The Good Wife killed off leading man Will Gardner in a truly shocking moment, as the actor playing him, Josh Charles, wanted out of the series after five seasons. While he was not the 'bad' husband, Gardner was the true love of the 'good' wife and this death will play out for the run of the series.Scandal killed off…

Tonight we saw the much anticipated series finale of How I Met Your Mother, the sweet funny sitcom that ran for nine years and 208 episodes.Successful series often struggle with how to end, from St Elsewhere's 'it was all a snow globe dream' to Desperate Housewives' man-focussed dead people return, to Seinfeld's everybody goes to prison for being snarky to Lost just ending weird. Few series end well. But it can be done… Six Feet Under ended well, as did Cheers; Mary Tyler Moore had a sad funny ending. And Newhart had a classic clever throwback to the previous Bob Newhart series……

While many biblical scholars have ignored non-canonical texts like the gnostic and apocryphal gospels that suggested Jesus had a wife, they are now not ignoring the 2012 discovery of a faded fragment of papyrus that suggests he did. According to this month's New York Times article, "Papyrus Referring to Jesus' Wife Is More Likely Ancient Than Fake, Scientists Say" the papyrus is now known as the "Gospel of Jesus's wife." This discovery, however, disrupts the Christian church's depiction of Jesus for many reasons. The Church doesn't want to say that Jesus had a wife because his evangelizing…

This has been the winter to end all winters. Living in Chicago is such a blessing when the sun shines and the temperatures dance around the 75 degree mark. It is magical when the Cubbies play and Andersonville sidewalks flood with tank topped women and the street festivals pull one weekend into the next. I love my city – most of the time. Sludge and snow – ice and wind – frozen fingers and muted recollections of what fresh air actually smells like – that is what Chicago winter has been all about this year. Don’t get me wrong – it is not about the cold and the snow in general…

One cyber-friend suggested discussing being gay not being negotiable. Her son had just come out to a straight friend and his words to the person are the title of this post. It’s a perfect statement and not just because it makes for an awesome title today, though that certainly helps. So much in life is negotiable these days that I’m surprised we don’t just put ourselves on ebay. Um…we don’t, actually, do we? It’s been a long time…

I was tempted to start this post off by asking if gay has become the new black. Why? Dictionary.com defines racism as “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.” If you remove race from the definition and substitute it with heterosexuality vs homosexuality, you’re left with a snapshot of parts of the world today. The problem with asking if gay has become the new black, though, is that there are people who…

What good is being gay when you have no one to love? What good is same-sex marriage when you’re single? During the periods when I was single, I watched a lot of films, at home, alone. The selection process had to be very cautious. Romance was out. Drama too, as my emotions were too raw after breakups. Suspense and mystery were iffy; I’m more easily spooked when I don’t have someone to protect. Sci-fi creeped me out. Comedy was about the only choice left...

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Barilla, but opinions are my own. My beloved and I distinctly remember the moment.  We were sitting at our dinner table in our first wee home. We locked eyes, and said to each other: “We’re ready.”  Ready, finally, to take the leap from where we were – a family of two committed people – into the inky unknown of two-plus.  If we were the luckiest people in the world, we would be led into that unknown by a few small people we could call our children. Turns out we were indeed the luckiest people in the world.  My beloved’s will…

Finis unius diei est principium alterius, as the Romans used to say, when they existed and spoke Latin to one another daily.  Or, to the rest of us: the end of one day is the beginning of another. Thus, at the beginning of the year, do I close one looong chapter between (sufficiently paying) jobs, and with unbridled glee and gratitude, begin a fresh one.  Come Monday morning, I’ll be combed and pressed and striding into a building spitting distance from this sign, which I take as a very good sign indeed.

    Alexander Wu

by Alexander Wu (Out Impact on Facebook, Out Impact on Twitter) After several years since her last full album, Kylie Minogue (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram) is back! Coming out with her first album in 1988, Kiss Me Once is her twelfth release. Citing Katy Perry, Destiny’s Child, and Lady Gaga as few of her many influences, you can definitely hear her inspiration and her own originality in this album. In recent months, pop music has continued to top the charts, and this album is another powerhouse in the genre. With an old-school Madonna type sound meeting new techno like…

BY CANDY PARKER Lesbian.com There are lots of reasons to love comedian Jennie McNulty. I can’t think of any right now, but… Just kidding, McNulty. Had you there for a minute, right? Though it’s difficult to be serious when discussing a woman as amusing as Jennie McNulty, I’ll shift gears and attempt to present all her wonderfuless (yes, I know that’s not a real word) in a professional journalistic manner. First, let’s start with the fact that Jennie traveled abroad to entertain our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. That scores some major patriotism points. Next,…

BY CANDY PARKER Lesbian.com WNBA star Brittney Griner had reservations about attending Baylor University. The highly recruited phenom had come out early in high school and was concerned about how she would be received at the Baptist school. But during the recruiting process her future coach Kim Mulkey told her, “You can be black, white, blue, purple, whatever. Above is a screenshot of the top of a letter I authored to my parents that I will be giving to them on Saturday. It is my attempt at a quirky, light-hearted, how-do-I-explain-this-? coming out letter. It is my best effort at explaining my queer-ness to them as well as asking them to support me as I begin low dose testosterone. I can’t decide if it will make them laugh or convince them that I have gone off the deep end. Here is the snippet which directly references socks: “I can compare my state of being to the socks I’m wearing. On my right foot is a white sock: functional, very…
