A Seattle couple who sustained multiple injuries during an attack at a Gay Pride event on Capitol Hill now face thousands of dollars in medical expenses. Rawstory reports that Steven Briggs and Patrick Dettling had been out celebrating the legalization of same-sex marriage last Sunday, when a gang of three men and two women approached them. As Dettling stretched, one of the men allegedly smacked his hand from out of the blue. And nature is exacting an awful retribution.” Hateful speech, it was said. Yet, when I wrote that line, AIDS victims in America numbered in the hundreds. Worldwide today they number in the millions. At first I assumed the domain names to be about a summit or conference of some sort that NOM was cooking up. However, after I saw that they'd also purchased names referring to a "Marriage ConCon" it became clear that a constitutional convention focused on marriage inequality was what they had in the cards. Jon Green
    1 Jul 2015 | 5:00 am
Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore isn’t one for man’s law, which is odd given that man’s law is literally his job. No, as we learned back in February, when he tried his damndest to violate Article Six of the Constitution by ignoring an order from the Supreme Court to let same-sex marriages commence in Alabama, he’s more about God’s law. Even if he’s wrong about it. Which is why it wasn’t exactly surprising when, earlier this week, Moore toyed with the idea of staying the Supreme Court’s ruling against bans on same-sex marriage for 25 days…
  • We absolutely do negotiate with terrorists, which is good because we have to

    Jon Green
    30 Jun 2015 | 9:00 am
The United States does not negotiate with terrorists, except when we do. In the most recent example (that we know of), last year President Obama coordinated a prisoner swap with the Taliban, releasing five terrorists soldiers in exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, a captured American soldier. One could quibble over whether this constituted a true negotiation with terrorists, or whether Bergdahl was better-described as a prisoner of war, making the negotiation for his release more common, but that’s beside the point. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan both negotiated with the Iranians, who were on…

If you have been to the grocery recently, you may have noticed a significant increase in the price of eggs. This is due to an egg shortage in the United States. A widespread outbreak of bird flu is sweeping across the midwest, mostly detected in large commercial flocks in 15 states. Iowa, the top egg producing state in the US has been the hardest hit. The United states Department of Agriculture and Plant Science Health Inspection Service has so far recorded over 48 million affected birds, all of which have either died from the disease or have been euthanized. This outbreak of bird flu,…
  • Supreme Court bars states from requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration

    Jon Green
    30 Jun 2015 | 7:00 am
In a less-celebrated win for voting rights advocates yesterday, the Supreme Court refused to consider an appeal from Arizona and Kansas seeking to allow them to require proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections. The ruling comes two years after the Court ruled that Arizona could not require citizens to provide proof of citizenship when using the “federal form,” a standard voter registration form issued by the US Election Assistance Commission, which all states are required to accept. That ruling allowed Arizona to go to the EAC and ask for special permission…
  • Supreme Court upholds independent redistricting commission

    Jon Green
    30 Jun 2015 | 6:00 am
In a 5-4 ruling yesterday, with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg writing the controlling opinion, the Supreme Court upheld an independent redistricting commission set up by Arizona voters via a ballot initiative in 2000. As Ginbsurg wrote in her ruling: “Arizona voters sought to restore the core principle of republican government, namely, that the voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.” As Greg Stohr at Bloomberg pointed out, the ruling only applies to the drawing of congressional districts, and does not affect the Arizona legislature’s ability to…

  • Same-Sex Couples More Equitable in Childcare, Chores than Different-Sex Ones

    Dana
    10 Jun 2015 | 5:01 am
Same-sex couples tend to share child care and certain household chores more equitably than different-sex ones, according to a new study. Both same- and different-sex couples divvy up household chores, according to “Modern Families: Same- and Different-Sex Couples Negotiating at Home,“conducted by the non-profit, nonpartisan Families and Work Institute. Different-sex couples, however, “generally do so in ways that align with traditional gender and power roles.” The study looked at 225 dual-earner couples who have been married or living with a partner for at…

The Fosters, ABC Family’s lesbian mom drama, returns tonight after a previous season that saw the youngest same-sex kiss on television. It’s followed by the premiere of Becoming Us, a reality series about a young man and his transitioning transgender parent. The kiss on The Fosters wasn’t notable just for being between two middle-school students. It was also notable for not being afraid to admit that some LGBTQ parents have LGBTQ children, even if it’s a myth that all of us do. I also love the show’s depiction of the relationship between moms Stef and Lena,…
  • Senate Denies Equal Veterans Benefits for Married Same-Sex Couples and their Children

    Dana
    5 Jun 2015 | 11:35 am
Photo courtesy Melissa Perkins-Fercha and AMPA The U.S. Senate yesterday failed to pass legislation that would have granted equal veteran’s benefits to married same-sex couples and their children. The bill would have provided equal benefits to same-sex married couples regardless of where they live, as long as their marriages had been performed where they were legal. Currently, however, veteran’s benefits are based on the state of residence, so veterans in states without marriage equality may find themselves without benefits. That’s what happened to Melissa Perkins-Fercha,…

When he first found out that Nadine was gay, “it took me a while before the light came on,” he says. Ultimately, however, he realized his initial attitude was the same as that of the people who didn’t want him to marry his wife. The post Equality Across the…

Almost 11 years ago, I turned my personal homepage into a blog covering Indiana politics and LGBT issues. A few years later as more and more folks signed up to join me here, we turned our focus national and Bilerico Project was born. We wanted to cover what was lacking on the big blogs at the time - real political and cultural analysis provided by LGBT movement leaders and everyday activists. We wanted diversity not only in our writers, but also their views. "What's the worst that could happen?" we thought. "No one likes the new format so we go back to our roots?" Thankfully, readers loved…

    K. Guzman
    16 Jun 2015 | 5:23 am
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there was no such thing as Facebook. Times were simpler and stories more true. Keeping up with the Jones’ was a simple contest regarding who had the best lawn or the newest car on the block. Laundry was hung privately in our own backyards and experiences were real and meaningful. We didn’t have the technology or the need to share every detail of our lives with a faceless population of acquaintances and false friends. It was a simpler more transparent and integral time. A liar is a liar and a fraud is a fraud no matter how the sugar coating and…

There are three times I can remember sitting down and watching the news for several hours. The first was the start of Gulf War back when I was in college, the second was 9/11, and the third was last Friday. I cried two out of three of those times and all three scared the hell out of me. Did I think marriage equality would win? I honestly didn’t know. And I was very, very afraid to believe it would because I didn’t want to get my hopes up. The odd thing is that had it gone against us, it would have thrown so much into chaos, especially for those states that previously had same-sex marriage…

I’ve been feeling the urge over the past year to instill some depth into my work and admit that I’m searching for a little more depth in life. Why the change? Probably because life is changing so drastically around me. Well, around us. It was easy as a child to not give a rip about what was going on outside the house or beyond when the next sci-fi or horror movie was coming on television. But these days? If one blinks, one could suddenly find themselves in a world they no longer recognize. I wrote a story last year for an anthology and while I’d decided to delve more into the area of…

That’s actually more entertaining than complicated, but you get the idea. Birthdays for me over the past two decades have been kinda crap. These are events I personally attended/witnessed as […]

It’s been two-weeks now since my man Jacques made an honest (wo)man out of me. I’M MARRIED! Officially all kinds of gay married, tho. WOW! Where do I start?! Well, once upon a time a shy southern boy growing up in the Bible Belt in Nashville hoped that one day he would meet the French man of his yet-known dreams and…. OK, OK! Not that far back! Ah, the memories of my husband and I. They are so fond in my heart, mind and soul. Here’s what I’ll share… I met Jacques in L.A. 15 years ago this past May. I had attended the previous year which was the premiere year for the pageant. Brett knew my background in the pageant circuit with the girls could be an asset to the show. We chatted about what I thought of the previous year and how I thought it could be bigger and better. The next thing I know I am sitting in a boardroom across from a true soldier for the…

You know the star. She is beautiful Gugu Mbatha-Raw! The film is called Beyond the Lights and is about a career-driven overbearing mother played to the bitchy hilt by Minnie Driver, both ruthless and shameless about getting her daughter Noni Jean (Mbatha-Raw) to a successful career in the music industry and extreme fame at any cost. While she sells her daughter’s sexuality and image to the highest bidder and brightest spotlight, Driver’s Macy Jean pushes Noni further away from her. The movie is truly one tragic train wreck to watch. It was 99 cents on iTunes when I was perusing…

Boys be simple.Boys be slick.Boys play games because boys are dicks. But boys will be boys, right? It's no secret I find men to be irritating, at least, most of the time. We can be downright frustrating, but for most of us, that's part of our allure, I suppose. For me, it just makes me want to fight a dude. When I first started this blog, I used to write essays upon essays about how men act within this same-gender-loving spectrum. Honestly, at this point, I should write a book about it because there's so much complexity involved to where you need some time to sit down read, digest, and…

Google never ceases to amaze me with the way they handle their products and advertisements. The above ad is no different. According to Huffpost - "Google has released a powerful new video that documents one transgender man's transition and his journey to find a community of supportive and like-minded individuals through a local business."Overall, this campaign is on the right track; however, I do wish the ad also featured trans people of color as well because that representation is hard to come by, especially when it comes to trans men of color, which is nearly non-existent. Let's not…

Yogi Berra, known for his mangled quips, reminds us, “It ain’t over, ’til it’s over.” Now that same sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, (Yay!) expect the fallout to come tumbling down and down and down. While SCOTUS has spoken in our favor, naysayers tell us their fight will continue. As with Row v. Wade, the right wingnuts with chisels in hand are already trying to chip at the new law in what will surely be a protracted effort to circumvent the ruling. Same-sex marriage bans from Tennessee, Kentucky,…

Chicago can claim to be one of the most progressive on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. One of the strongest illustrations Chicago can make of that progressiveness is the number of out lesbian and gay persons who have been elected to its storied city council. Among the many causes for celebration at the Chicago Pride Parade on Sunday was the introduction of a more unified LGBT voice in the city’s legislative chamber. A co-worker of mine told me his almost two-year-old daughter has a favorite new word: “NO!” I love this. In fact, I was wishing some of my clients could get more comfortable saying the word no. What is the challenge in saying this simple word? From working with others, and from my own personal experience, it seems to come down to the fear that if we say “no” people may not like us. It also has to do with the fear of hurting or inconveniencing someone else. This fear can be so strong people will sacrifice their own well being to please others. Saying “yes” when one really should…
