My grandmother loved Liberace and watched him weekly; I thought he was fascinatingly creepy, a vibe was only heightened by his appearance on Batman. 21 May 2013 | 5:40 pmU.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) says federal aid to his home state after the tornado should be offset by spending cuts elsewhere. It arose late last year when Superstorm Sandy ravaged the East Coast. And though we cannot know whether man-made climate change was specifically responsible for either of those acts of nature, we do know federal spending to cope with extreme weather events has been rising. This senseless act cannot be condoned in America or anywhere, and we urge that the perpetrator be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Our heart goes out to the family of the victim, and we hold them in our prayers. While this killing appears to have no connection to the current debate about redefining marriage, there is no room for violence toward any American — whether they support traditional marriage or not. No person… -
Obama Backs Illinois Marriage
21 May 2013 | 2:10 pmUnsurprising, but still welcome.President Obama would support Illinois's same-sex marriage bill if he were still serving in the legislature there, the White House said Tuesday. "Were the president still in the Illinois State Legislature, he would support this measure that would treat all Illinois couples equally," spokesman Shin Inouye said in response to a question from POLITICO. "While the president does not weigh in on every measure being considered by state legislatures, he believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect," Inouye said. "As he has said, his… -

21 May 2013 | 1:32 pmFar-right National Front party leader Marine Le Pen today applauded the actions of the anti-gay marriage activist who committed suicide this afternoon at the altar of Notre Dame Cathedral. The suicide was hailed as a political gesture by Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right National Front. "All respect to Dominique Venner whose final, eminently political act was to try to wake up the people of France," Le Pen said on Twitter, signing her initials to indicate that she had written the entry personally. 21 May 2013 | 4:40 pmNews: Two Democratic legislators and the head of a nonprofit organization advocating for LGBT rights in Virginia held a press call Tuesday to condemn the anti-LGBT records and rhetoric used by the GOP's statewide candidates, specifically Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, candidate for governor, and lieutenant governor nominee E.W. Virginia GOP Chooses Cuccinelli-Jackson-Obenshain Ticket: Republican picks for statewide office have notorious records of anti-LGBT animus
20 May 2013 | 2:42 pmNews: Nearly 8,000 Virginia Republican officeholders and activists gathered Saturday at the Greater Richmond Convention Center to select the party's candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The result is one of the most conservative candidate slates in recent memory. The Republicans at Saturday's closed party convention – rather than a statewide primary, which likely would have diluted some of the right-leaning participation – selected Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a tea party supporter and conservative firebrand who has been the presumptive nominee… -

LGBT Groups Slam Gov. McDonnell on ''Virginia Adopts'': New campaign for placement of children labeled hypocritical in light of McDonnell signing ''conscience clause'' law
17 May 2013 | 1:34 pmNews: LGBT groups are crying foul after Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) launched a campaign Friday aimed at finding homes for a thousand of the nearly 4,000 children in Virginia's foster care system. The Family Equality Council and Equality Virginia are pointing out that McDonnell has previously restricted adoption and foster-care options by signing into law a so-called ''conscience clause'' bill that allows state-licensed agencies to discriminate against prospective parents on sexual orientation and a variety of other factors. A component of McDonnell's new ''Virginia Adopts'' initiative is the… -
Star Trek Returns: J.J. Abrams's latest has plenty of bang, but also rekindles the franchise's noble roots
16 May 2013 | 11:16 amFilm: Star Trek: Into Darkness What does it mean to make a Star Trek movie? Director J.J. Abrams skirted this question when he brought the U.S.S. Enterprise back to life four years ago, plotting a new origin story for Captain James T. Kirk that was engorged with interstellar combat, death-defying stunts and an endless parade of fistfights. The revival was a delight, of course – but at what cost? It seemed less a Star Trek movie than a sci-fi action romp that just happened to be set against a familiar backdrop. Star Trek Into Darkness, presumably Abrams's last volley in this galaxy…

Vacation Vixen: Dorothy Gale
21 May 2013 | 12:00 amI grew up in the Midwest, where tornado season blew in every year with its warning tickers on the TV and sirens across the city. I remember afternoons spent watching cartoons with my “Go Basket” next to me filled with the essentials – my best flashlight, my most beloved book, my favorite stuffed animal. I remember middle-of-the-night runs to the basement where my PJ-clad parents shepherded us – sleepy kids, barking dogs – into the cold safety of the basement. I remember the calm, sickly grey-green the sky always turned before the winds came. And, as I’m writing this, back in my… -

Vacation Vixen: Minnesota
17 May 2013 | 12:00 amMarriage equality? You betcha. Welcome, lucky No. 12. This week Minnesota made it an even dozen, following the small flurry of states to pass marriage equality this year (high fives, Rhode Island and Delaware!) Sure, there are still 38 to go. But the momentum is unmistakable and our friend inertia knows that bodies in motion tend to stay in motion. So let’s all make like Mary Tyler Moore and throw out proverbial hats into the sky with joy at a more equal world we’re creating today for all of our tomorrows. Also, you gotta love a state with hot dishes and rainbow bridges. -

Vacation Vixen: Julie White
15 May 2013 | 12:00 amFuck wank bugger shitting arse head and hole. I am so goddammed pissed they canceled “Go On.” I mean, seriously. Did you have that much going for you in the comedy department, NBC? Sure, you wisely renewed “Parks and Recreation” and “Community” (well, depending on how you liked the Dan Harmon-less incarnation). But axing “Go On” just as it had begun to really find its groove and could become something truly great. YOU FUCKING SUCK. I now demand that Julie White’s character Anne be wholesale moved over to another show – any other show. Comedy, drama, crime procedural.

Steve Marries Steve in “Blue’s Clues” Wedding
21 May 2013 | 5:03 amSome lighter news as a break from more serious stuff: It’s been a number of years since my son watched preschool TV shows, and I’m generally glad I don’t have their earworm jingles in my head anymore. (Pre-1980s Sesame Street songs are the exceptions.) I was unexpectedly delighted, though, to hear that two actors playing “Steve” of Blue’s Clues fell in love and married each other. The New York Times has a video of actor Tom Mizer and his understudy in Blue’s Clues Live, Travis McGhie, explaining their initially tense relationship and eventual romance. -
Thinking of Oklahoma
20 May 2013 | 6:41 pmTonight, I am thinking of the friends I have whose family and friends live in Moore, Oklahoma. A tornado ripped through and destroyed two elementary schools, a hospital, and unnamed other buildings earlier today. The latest numbers from MSNBC say that seven elementary school students are among the dead, and another 30 are unaccounted for. My thoughts and wishes are with all of those affected by the tragedy, but especially the parents and families of those children. May you find the strength, comfort, and support you need. Once again, two resources that may help: “Helping Children Deal with… -
Your Monday “Arrgh”: Judge Orders Lesbian Mom’s Partner to Move Out Because They’re Not Married
20 May 2013 | 5:03 amA Texas judge has ruled that a lesbian mom’s partner of three years move out, because of a “morality clause” in the mom’s divorce papers (from a previous opposite-sex marriage). The clause requires that no one she has a non-marital ”dating or intimate relationship” with may stay in the home after 9 p.m. if the children are present, reports the Dallas Voice. And of course, same-sex couples are forbidden by law to marry or have their marriages recognized in Texas. The good news, such as it is, for Carolyn Compton, her partner Page Price, and the… -

Same-Sex Marriage Shouldn't Be the Focus of the Immigration Debate
21 May 2013 | 12:30 pmThe LGBT news has been chock full of articles and op-eds decrying Senator Chuck Schumer's reluctance to include same-sex couples in the current immigration reform package. Advocates insist that the right of binational couples to sponsor their foreign partners for citizenship is a must-have to get their blessing. This is an extremely short-sighted and dangerous game that should shame the LGBT movement, but, unfortunately, it's become a rallying cry for some leaders. Once again, the needs of gay couples are being put ahead of the welfare of thousands of LGBT people. Continue reading "Same-Sex… -

The Supreme Court "affirmed that the expression of homosexuality and homosexual affection cannot serve as a basis for discriminatory treatment, which has no support in the Constitution," said Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa on the council's… -
Gay Hate Crimes on the Rise in Paris France
15 May 2013 | 6:47 amGay Travel Warning - Paris may be the city of love - but not gay love. Even though France recently signed a bill for Marriage Equality - gay hate crimes and hate speech are on the rise. How does someone have that much hate - to inflict pain - or death - to another human being? Why can't people just let people be? Assaults on members of the gay community and incidents of homophobic hate speech have risen sharply in France over the last year, according to the annual report by a leading gay rights group, released on Tuesday. Attacks on gay women and men and homophobic speech… -
Being Gay and Gay Travel in Costa Rica
10 May 2013 | 10:04 amGAY TRAVEL to Costa Rica has dramatically increased over the last 10 years. However, it's NOT in the top 10 gay friendly places to visit! While certain politicians, such as former president Óscar Arias, have expressed some support for LGBT-rights, Costa Ricans tend to be socially conservative when it comes to sexual orientation and gender identity issues, in large part due to the strong influences of the Roman Catholic Church and cultural traditions about machismo.Gay friendly? Gay tolerant? Is their really such a thing as GAY Costa Rica, and are the Ticos really THAT accepting of the…

Senate Democrats Cave To GOP, Sacrifice Gays, Pass Immigration Reform Out Of Committee
21 May 2013 | 5:21 pmIt’s often said the two things you never want to see being made are laws and sausage. Sadly, binational same-sex couples were the sacrificial lambs in today’s sausage-making legislation. Democratic Senators Patrick Leahy, Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, Dick Durbin, and even Al Franken all agreed to not include protections for LGBT couples that essentially mirrored language in the Uniting All Families Act (UAFA) in the hopes their Republican colleagues — the minority — will allow them to avoid a filibuster and pass (almost) comprehensive immigration reform. -

The House sponsor of the Illinois bill says he has the votes to pass it, and marriage “absolutely” will come to the Land of Lincoln by month’s end. “President Obama would support Illinois’s same-sex marriage bill if he were still serving in the legislature there, the White House said Tuesday,” according to Politico: “Were the president still in the Illinois State Legislature, he… -

Things Beans and Bears Do: Like redeem themselves.
18 May 2013 | 7:20 pmPart of me thinks this post should be merely a photo of Jenn and I holding a copy of today’s newspaper, our eyes pleading for rescue. We remind ourselves daily, ‘We are the grown-ups. We are taller.’ Some days it works. Other days I sneak a little Malibu into my blueberry lemonade. The Bear is 4-1/2 years old now. She’ll be five in August. FIVE. She has grown into a delightful version of herself, thanks mostly to her amazing preschool teacher. She uses manners forty percent of the time, “brushes” her own teeth in the morning and really only melts down when… -
The longest three minutes.
24 Mar 2013 | 5:32 pmShe moved fast, her fluorescent pink sweatshirt with the psychedelic pony splashed across the front becoming a streamer of light as she disappeared into the crowd. Jenn was ten feet behind me, disembarking the floor piano. The Bear was ten feet in front of me, half-posed to take off with her sister toward the sensory bin, half-frozen since her sister had other plans. It happened in a flash, like I’ve read in too many checkout lane magazines. The Bean was gone. My mom told me a story when I was little — or maybe I overheard her telling someone else — about a little girl my… -
Evolution.
11 Mar 2013 | 6:33 pmThere have been many moments recently when I’ve looked at my kids and wondered how they arrived here in my life. Or maybe that’s not it. I know how they arrived here, via social worker, after paperwork, in a compact car at night. It’s more a confusion about how I arrived here, playing the part of a grown-up who lives in a two-story colonial with a wife and two small people whose suns rise and set to me. My kids are not the strangers. I feel like I am. The last year has been busy. The busiest. Despite doubting it every other day, I have somehow managed to have it all. A… -

I posted in my head about the third night ever in more than two years that Jenn and I have had a night away. It was a funny post, too. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. We always stay at the Holiday Inn Express. No reason, other than it’s become a thing. And the mini-fridge. There was the hair on Jenn’s plate at dinner that led to the perspiring manager, free creme brûlée, and bonus salmon. There was also the flurry of text… -
I do not take days like today for granted.
3 Jul 2012 | 7:43 pmThe Bean slept in our laundry basket her first night with us. Our social worker had advised us not to buy anything prior to placement since we were open to accepting children up to age four. Our social worker was a moron. The Bean slept on the floor in a laundry basket and the Bear slept on our queen-size guest bed. I didn’t sleep at all that first night, just three feet from the Bean and, though Jenn drifted off at her post with the Bear far across the apartment, she remained vigilant, coverless, leaping to all fours and growling protectively when I whispered to her in the darkness…

Best of TV, 2013...
18 May 2013 | 11:01 pmThe 2012-2013 TV season is winding down, and while I have not watched some acclaimed hits like Breaking Bad, I have watched my share of good and bad TV, so here are my picks for what entertained me this season: Best Comedy: Big Bang Theory -- Howard coming back from space, Amy Farrah-Fowler's bigger role, and the usual geeky humour had me laughing out loud. Best Drama: Sure it's not Shakespeare, but I wouldn't watch Shakespeare every week... and season two of the revamped super-soap Dallas was suspenseful, sexy and sometimes just funny. Beautiful rich people sleeping around and stabbing… -

See This Movie: Seeking A Friend...
5 May 2013 | 8:29 pmOne of my favourite things about all our movie channels and video-on-demand TV options is discovering little seen movies, or catching the big flicks I missed the first time around. I just discovered last year's little-seen Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, with Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. While promoted as a comedy, this is more of a wistful drama... and I found it enchanting. In Seeking..., An asteroid named "Matilda" is on a collision course towards Earth and in three weeks the world will come to an end... so what would you do? The film's primary characters, Carell's… -

Minnesota Republicans Kill Anti-Bullying Bill
21 May 2013 | 8:30 amI've written frequently over the past few years about the chilling epidemic of anti-LGBT bullying in the state of Minnesota; the anti-gay animus of the Minnesota GOP; and the spiritual bullying of Twin Cities Archbishop John Nienstedt, one of the most outspoken homophobes in the American Catholic hierarchy. But yesterday those three topics intersected in a way that makes me sick to my stomach: Minnesota Republicans forced the withdrawal of an anti-bullying bill in the state senate after the Minnesota Catholic Conference claimed that if the measure was signed into law, it would turn schools…

The Intriguing Life of a Leather Vixen—Meet Nadia Oussenko
21 May 2013 | 8:37 amIn this small-world community of ours, we often hear the same names being mentioned over and over without really knowing the backstory of a person. In this case, I’m hoping to change that and improve your world just a little bit. Nadia Oussenko is a face you may recognize, but her contribution to the arts is much, much more than you would probably ever imagine. This smiling, dancing woman in frilly black skirts and dark eyes is an inspiration, and a name you should get familiar with as fast as you can. From her suitably creepy film inspiration and keen fashion sense, to her experience at… -

The Weekend We Found Xanadu That Was
20 May 2013 | 3:00 amThis was another special weekend, mostly because like the conventions I attend, it only happens once a year. And it typically involves a convention. My best friend from college (Don) comes down with his girlfriend (Lindsay) and we attend the Motor City Comicon. We’ve done this for the last ten years or so (which includes years prior to his meeting his girlfriend), only we skipped it this year. Instead, we drove around, listened to lots of Journey (one of author Dorien Grey’s favorite groups…so be sure to ask him about them!), and proceeded to explore the area around us in ways we never… -

Excuse Me, Sir? Would You Please Pick Out A #*$%@ Carpet?
16 May 2013 | 3:00 amSeveral of you have been mightily amused reading about my struggles during the home renovation project. I haven’t been quite as amused, but it’s entirely possible I may look back on this one day and find it amusing. Or I may have one of my staff look back on it and tell me how amusing it was. It could happen. The latest fiasco is the carpet. How friggin’ difficult is it to pick out carpet? And how exactly does one relay information to one’s husband about the carpet in order to make an informed decision when the aforementioned husband has a ‘thing’ about long phone conversations?

Another Random Observation
15 May 2013 | 10:29 am[B] As [K] pointed out everytime she re-watches Xena it becomes a little gayer. I totally agree with that, even though everything gets a little gayer if [K] re-watches it. Anyway my point here: Willow does get gayer too everytime I re-watch Buffy. Need proof? Willow is already wearing a perfectly pride conform outfit even before she’s hooking up with Oz. Oh and remember the episode Halloween (Season 2, Episode 6): Willow outs herself as Xena fangirl. I kinda miss the late 90s. -

I found myself giggling throughout the whole read (which, trust me, is much too rare in researching for one’s thesis, hence the excitement). Why? 15 Years: And they said it would not last.
21 May 2013 | 6:20 amToday is our fifteen years anniversary. Good Lord, has it really been that long? It feels like yesterday that I first met my husband. I still vividly remember that day I sent my friend over to go and tell hubby I thought he was cute. I also remember the agonizing two months that I had to wait for him to become available. I also clearly recall that auspicious Sunday evening when we finally officially became a couple, at a Drag Show nonetheless. For a long time we lied and told people we met at an art exhibition. Things I do that annoy my husband
15 May 2013 | 7:48 amThis has been said by me innumerable times but for the sake of making sure nobody ever forgets it, I will say it again – my husband really deserves a medal for putting up with me. I am no picnic to live with and should I have been accompanied with an instruction manual it would have come in volumes and would have read like an IKEA manual but without the illustration and it would have been printed in Chinese. There are many ways one could sugarcoat this. For example I could say that I am complicated, emotionally complex and eccentric bordering on the ridiculous. But… -

Study reveals same-sex relationships in China over millennia
7 Jan 2013 | 6:30 amSociologist Pan Guangdan has found plenty of historical documents bearing evidence to the existence and tolerance of homosexuality in China over thousands of years. For example, during his groundbreaking study, Pan discovered that almost every emperor of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24) had or was suspected of having male partners. China Daily provides a good report on Pan's research that will perhaps set the tone for a more full acceptance and understanding of same-sex relationships in the world's most populous country. The context for their interchange is nicely summarized at digital spy. Sex and the teenage girl: The Kaitlyn Hunt tragedy
21 May 2013 | 2:00 pmBe honest, how many of you reading this column would have been charged with “lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12-16 years of age” when you were 18? This is assuming of course that you got caught, and the state you lived in had such laws. Gay sex, straight sex, touching, fondling, groping, licking, sucking – I’m talking sex of any kind. How many of you would right now be registered as a sex offender?

12 May 2013 | 10:56 pmHappy truck washer, Berkeley, CA. This time I convinced him to get outside the vehicle as I washed it (last time: he stayed inside and listened to a Sondheim musical). He had that huge spray nozzle thingie in his hands for a mere moment, and he instantly understood why Baba has so dadgum much fun washing the vehicles. And he was danged good at it, too. I tried to convince him that going on a dump run was about as much fun, maybe more. “Huge piles of garbage, taller than that building there!” I said. “Ginormous tractors just pushing the garbage in a huge pile! I can’t say what in the Sam Hill they were aiming for here. One version was a dog, I remember that. But it kind of took off from “dog” and headed in more of a “Dali” direction. Feeling a bit less verbal here, a bit more photographic. For perhaps evident reasons. World’s a bit spinny lately. -

20 May 2013 | 7:00 amGay activists from GetEqual interrupted the speech of Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) at the Hillsborough County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner in Tampa, Florida on Saturday. An arrest was made in the senseless murder of Mark Carson, in New York’s West Village, on Friday night. Elliot Morales, 33, was arraigned on Sunday, and was charged with second degree murder as a… -

Tel Aviv Gay Pride – What is there to look forward to?
14 May 2013 | 4:25 pmPretty much all of this: When researching my previous post on the top summer destinations for gay travelers, I stumbled on the Flickr photography by Tom Giebel of Atomische. With his permission, I’m sharing some of his photos from the 2011 gay pride in Tel Aviv. Assuming the weather will be nice (and really—June in the Middle East shouldn’t be anything but warm & sunny), I should have an equally fun time at this year’s pride. Gay pride in Israel – gay tours to the Holy Land
26 Apr 2013 | 5:09 pmTel Aviv seems to be the buzz word among gay travelers these days. From my own personal travel experiences, Tel Aviv has been a gay travel hotspot for a while. At some point in the 2000′s, I’d always heard it was an open-minded and popular beach destination. But back in January when The Daily Beast published this story about Tel Aviv as the “The New Gay Travel Hotspot,” it seemed the idea was alive and kickin’—even if it was old news. And while new gay travel boutiques may be opening up at a fast rate catering to LGBT tourism in Israel, some companies have been…

Tuesday is Election Day!
20 May 2013 | 6:46 pmPost contains links to various lists of endorsements. I want to encourage my readers in Pittsburgh to vote for Bill Peduto for Mayor of Pittsburgh. Bill has long been a friend of the LGBTQ community, and a hard working city officials for progressive issues. And despite how he is characterized in those swiftboat-like ads, he is a consensus builder and coalition builder. -
Ginsberg and the flawed Roe v Wade decision.
20 May 2013 | 6:11 pmIn our democracy, there is a sharing of power between three branches of the government and also between the states and the Federal Government. Issue advocates may seek a singular decision from the highest court in the land that "changes everything," but this is inconsistent with the very foundation of how our democracy works. Progress on an issue must occur at the state level, as well as at the Federal level simultaneously, and within public sentiment and cultural change must accompany legislative and legal victories. -

Best Bargains for Beach Gear Online
5 May 2013 | 10:34 amIt's a quiet Sunday and I'm sitting here typing this while glancing out the window every so often at the overcast skies wondering what the beach feels like today. When the beach calls and a road trip is in the works, there's really only a few choices we consider. If we don't hit Laguna Beach we have found ourselves scaling the cliffs at San Diego's Black's Beach about 2 1/2 hours outside Palm Springs. Plus, we're able to drop trou as soon as we get on the sand which is nice for no tan lines. We aren't shy. What's the point? There's an area further down on the right that is considered the "gay… -

I can no longer hide my bump – not that I want to! Every now and then K looks at me and says…”wow you really look pregnant!” I’ve even bought some maternity clothes off eBay as most of my… -
Baby Bump
5 May 2013 | 4:03 pmSo I thought it was about time I shared some baby bump pics. It’s only really been in the last few weeks that I’ve popped out. I’m feeling lots of beautiful flutters and popcorn in my belly when Sticky moves! A couple of nights ago I was relaxing on the couch. Our dog had her head resting on my tummy, fast asleep, when Sticky decided to kick. It was a bit more than the usual pop or flutter that I normally feel and our dog felt it too. She flinched, woke up for a second then went back into her slumber. It was so cute and so exciting to see as I really really can’t wait… -
Ah-choo!
29 Apr 2013 | 10:08 pmSo even though I feel a million times better than I did in the first trimester, this second trimester has brought with it really bad sinus and frequent sneezing. When I say frequent sneezing, I mean probably about 10-20 sneezing fits every day, with each fit having about 10-20 sneezes! A whole lot of sneezing! I wonder if our Sticky will recognise me more by my sneezing than by my actual voice when he/she makes her/his way into the world? At first I thought it was just my hay-fever, which I do suffer from, but after a bit of research I’ve found out that this is a common symptom, if not… -
It’s nice to feel normal again!
28 Apr 2013 | 5:23 pmIt was almost like someone flicked a switch right on 14 weeks. No more nausea and fatigue is minimal, I almost feel normal again. I even had a night out with the girls on the weekend at a great restaurant in the city. We didn’t get home until midnight, which is a very late night for me considering I’ve mostly been going to bed around 8.30pm. Along with feeling better, I’ve got back into the knitting. I had a break for a while, whist I felt awful. I knitted two sets of booties (pictured) on the weekend for a friend of mine who is 6 months pregnant. I plan to make more for our… -
14.5 weeks and lots of excitement
24 Apr 2013 | 8:36 pmSo much excitement in our household at the moment and so much happening. I’m now 14.5 weeks and am starting to get a little baby bump and I’m now anxiously awaiting that first flutter of movement. We have just arrived back from a bit of a road trip to Melbourne, where we visited my best friend, who is 18 weeks pregnant. We have been friends since we were 15 and we find it quite amazing that in all the years we have known each other (23 years) we both managed to get pregnant at the same time. Our other good friend is also pregnant (6 months). K thinks it’s a bit like the…

Sit & Read: Awesome Chairs Designed for Bibliophiles
15 May 2013 | 12:15 pmIf you’ve ever seen my apartment, you know that I have piles of books and no good place to put them. Yes, I have my favorites (a.k.a. the spines of which I want company to see and be impressed…) in a bookshelf in the living room but I certainly need more creative ways of displaying […] -
Spanish Promoters Let Fans Pay What They Want For Live Show
14 May 2013 | 12:07 pmConcerts are a way for music lovers to show their appreciation of a hard-working band and for musicians to make more money in the depreciative music industry. However as demand for music shows surges, ticket prices have escalated considerably, and now fans can’t always afford to see all the bands they love. So Spanish promoters Caravana de […] -
Sometimes Sunny San Francisco Can Be a Cold, Cold Place
10 May 2013 | 1:55 pmLongtime readers of this blog may recall I’ve had some highs and lows at the GLAAD Media Awards. Last year, Denys got to meet his girl crush, Dianna Agron. The year prior, however, Kim “I Take Myself Way Too Seriously” Cattrall scolded me on the red carpet for asking for her blowjob tips. You win some, […] -
Rothko Meets Malibu
3 May 2013 | 8:17 amI still remember the day I fell in love with Mark Rothko. It was during my study abroad stint in my Madrid when I decided to venture alone to the city’s Reina Sofia. I stood in front of some of Rothko’s most consuming paintings, and instantly I had a new favorite artist. And apparently I’m […] -

Just a few random thoughts
3 May 2013 | 12:46 pmBlogging for me used to be easy. Whatever came to my mind, I'd go right to my computer and post it. I don't know how I was able to go to work, go to school, try to lead a social life, and blog back in my early 20's, but now, my energy is low, and I've allowed me job to pretty much dictate my creativity and social development. As much as I'm happy for any public figure who decides to come out to the media, no matter how famous or unknown, I'm still underwhelmed by the overall action. Whether genuine, malicious (jaded lover), or ostentatious, I can't say what intentions lie behind these… -
The family tree is only as strong as its roots
14 Apr 2013 | 7:10 pmIt's been hard to focus lately, so the writing and creativity has stopped, the outreach has stopped, and the overall motivation to expand my horizons has come to a complete halt. There's a list of things I need to get done, as well as things I want to do, but it seems my timing is all off. Funny enough, I woke up one day in my apartment, and it seemed that all the various electronic devices were out of sync in time; it sort of freaked me out. The clock on my fireplace was seven minutes faster than the clock on my Roku player, which was two minutes slower than the clock on my laptop. I kind of… -
A few updates
4 Apr 2013 | 8:09 amSo here's what's been up:A family member passed away last week, which brought about some repressed family matters that I need to face.Insomnia's been kicking into overdrive as of late, so I've been tired lately.Had a long work week last week because that's how my shift is designed. Not a fan of it,I'm getting my finances in order because I really am going to do away with my current job and begin my freelance writing career.I've enrolled in a freelance writing class just as a stepping stone and networking tool toward reaching my goal.My interest in poetry is slowly creeping back to me. I'm… -
11 unfinished posts, which one should I finish first?
21 Mar 2013 | 9:22 amSometimes depression will affect my productivity. I'll have my up phases of knocking tasks out without any issues, but then I'll have my down phases where I either get overwhelmed with the work I've accumulated, or I develop a can't-be-bothered type of attitude, preferring sleep over anything else. Nonetheless, this is the life that chose me, so I gotta thug it out the best way I can. With that said, my attention to certain things gets sidetracked, and my main focus then becomes finding ways to snap out of my funk. As much as I should use this blog to write more when I am going through these… -
Nativity of naivety (Lecture 2 - Id[entity])
6 Mar 2013 | 8:21 pmIt's very easy to feel like you're damaged beyond repair. That mind frame resides in a good bit of us, you know, the proverbial half man trying to be made whole, and we choose how to deal with it in difference ways. Our vices at times can sustain us, but it's only temporary in most cases. Food, drink, art, sex, it's whatever keeps us busy enough not to think. However, not even the strongest vices can help us cope with our cognitive reasoning once we are left in solitude. Based on my solitude, I find myself angry, and I just want to let it all go. Been in this position before, and I went…

20 May 2013 | 7:57 amBy Laura Zaepfel (Out Impact on Facebook, Out Impact on Twitter) New music is sometimes the hardest to get ahold of, especially when looking for something that isn’t generic and on the radio. Alpine (Twitter, Facebook), an alternative band from Australia, is set to debut their first album tomorrow, May 21, on Votiv. Set to be on showcase with the Spanish rockers Crystal Fighters this coming summer, the band has recently been named iTunes’ Australian Alternative Album of the Year and will be making their rounds on United States soil. Ng Imagine being called a faggot while you and your boyfriend/girlfriend were just walking down the street in New York City. Imagine trying to have a typical morning with your significant other, and being viciously attacked for one reason and one reason only: you are gay. These anti-gay attacks are what sparked an anti-hate crime rally Thursday, May 16. “This is how I go to work…I will not live in fear,” Miss Stonewall 2013 drag performer Frostie Flakes held…
