A friend of mine took this photo today from his office across from 30 Rock. If you look closely you'll see the nearly-installed Comcast name. Last June the New York Times reported on the sign change: Comcast, which last year bought General Electric’s remaining 49 percent stake in NBCUniversal, applied for a “certificate of appropriateness” from the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission to replace G.E.’s 24-foot-high initials on 30 Rockefeller Plaza. G.E., now based in Fairfield, Conn., has long had a presence in New York. Whether another name change will be embraced by the public…

Binge-watching shows on Netflix has become an actual activity at my house, rather than something that just kind of happens in background while we clean or pay bills. Now it’s something I consciously plan and look forward to. Nothing to do on Sunday afternoon? Better pencil in four non-stop hours of a House of Cards. Rain keeping us inside? Time to watch all 13 episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… Don’t lie. You know you’re just as guilty for indulging in day-long sessions of hardcore series watching, too! However, while there are plenty of hyped shows available for…

“I am not a monster,” Thomas Guerra told the courtroom before receiving his sentencing this week. Back in August of last year we reported on an unsettling story out of San Diego involving then-29-year-old Guerra knowingly infecting his boyfriend with HIV. The boyfriend was contacted by a former lover of Guerra via Facebook Messenger, who warned him that Thomas was a liar and HIV-positive. “Texts where he’s stating he’s negative to people then bragging to others about giving people his ‘positive load.’ It’s crude, it’s… I don’t know how someone could treat…

According to William Ruto, the Kenyan deputy president, the country’s tolerance for gay people is at an all time low. During a public church service the governmental official asserted that Kenyan society had no place for any sort of queer culture. "The Republic of Kenya is a republic that worships God. We have no room for gays and those others," he said. Homosexuality has been illegal since the country was first organized as a free state in 1963 after existing as a British colony. Loafers is considered a major part of the Irish gay rights movement when it was the first gay bar established within the country in 1983, 10 years before the country officially decriminalized homosexual acts.  Proprietor Ted O'Connell said that economic factors severely affected the bar in the last few years; an Irish bank now wants to have vacant possession of the bar. The State Department said Monday it has no evidence that any actions taken by Hillary Clinton when she was secretary of state were influenced by donations to the Clinton Foundation or former President Bill Clinton’s speaking fees. That may indeed be true, but it misses the real point. Simply because her actions may not have risen to provable criminal levels, the real issue is about trust. The numbers don’t lie. Either/or, suggests the conservative readership of WND: Going To The Chapel [WND] The funny thing is, I'm not sure which of the top two answers WND editors would prefer. From their not being more Black Widow merchandise to there not being a Black Widow movie it’s hard – actually impossible – to argue there isn’t blatant sexism in Hollywood’s superhero making machine. The British actress is particularly delightful on twitter. How delightful? So delightful she follows through months later on her tweets. Like when she told fans in December that she had to rush off the “Agent Carter” set in full costume, makeup, wig, harness and Spanx to get to the DMV. Funny in and of itself, yes? But then here it is four months later and Hayley proves her words. Peggy has a license to drive.Well this is surreal. Have to…

So, how about a salve for all the complaints about Hollywood this week, eh? And it comes in the form of the newest trailer for “Bessie.” Damn, I’m pretty excited about this. I really, really am. A diverse cast. Juicy roles for women. Exploration of sexuality. But that’s what you get when you make movies about underrepresented populations. And that’s also what you get when you allow talented women, people of color and out directors like Dee Rees (of “Pariah” fame) to helm a project. More of this, Hollywood, more of this.

  • American Sniper, back in the crosshairs of controversy

    Lucas Ropek
    5 May 2015 | 9:00 am
American Sniper, Clint Eastwood’s 2014 biopic on marksman Chris Kyle, has once again become the center of national controversy. Last week, the Muslim Students Association (MSA) at the University of Maryland protested a showing of it on campus. Complaining that the film was racist, the student group issued a statement, saying: American Sniper only perpetuates the spread of Islamophobia and is offensive to many Muslims around the world for good reason. This movie dehumanizes Muslim individuals, promotes the idea of senseless mass murder, and portrays negative and inaccurate…
  • Institutional racism by the numbers

    5 May 2015 | 7:00 am
Across America, riots and protests are taking place in reaction to news of police violence against the black community. Among other things, it has sparked an ongoing discussion in America about institutional racism, along with a debate as to whether it exists. The fact that we have to have a debate over this question is absurd. Institutional racism has been and continues to be pervasive in America, and to suggest otherwise is to be willfully ignorant of its evidence. The appropriate question is not whether, but rather to what extent it exists. Here are the numbers: Institutional racism in…
  • Chlamydia outbreak at Texas high school with no sex ed policy

    5 May 2015 | 5:00 am
If you’re in charge of the high school curriculum in Texas, you know a few things. You know that evolution is bad. You know that Newt Gingrich is good. And you know that sex is gross. That’s why high schools in Texas aren’t required to include sexual education in their curriculum. And if they do choose to talk about students getting it on with each other, they have to emphasize how dangerous and awful and icky and unholy it is. So what little sex ed Texas students get in class sounds a lot like this: Why didn’t they listen??? God doesn’t want you to do…
  • After marriage equality, let’s win secular wedding equality

    Chris Trejbal
    4 May 2015 | 11:00 am
Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that could finally grant marriage equality to same-sex couples in all 50 states. But that isn’t enough. We also need wedding equality. Suppose you are Christian, Muslim or Jewish. At your wedding, you want the celebrant who solemnizes your marriage to be someone important in your life, someone who shares your values and will offer meaningful wisdom. It makes sense to turn to a favorite minister, imam or rabbi. Secular Americans – atheists, agnostics, humanists and spiritualists who do not subscribe to any particular religion –…
  • California bill would make state’s demographic data collection LGBT-inclusive

    Jon Green
    4 May 2015 | 9:00 am
Citizen interactions with government bureaucracy are, in many cases, an exercise in data collection. When you go to a public health agency or the Social Security Administration, you fill out forms asking for your age, race, sex and so on. These data are then used both to facilitate your interaction with the government and for the government to account for trends in various demographic groups. If one group stands out from the rest as being at a significant disadvantage, those data can be used to make a case for government policy to eliminate the disadvantage. But only if policymakers know…

The people of Baltimore have been much on my mind lately—and on many of our minds, I suspect. Reader Mary has shared her thoughts on watching coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality cases while watching the Baltimore protests. In “Or does it explode,” at her blog Bread and Roses, she suggests a number of links to give information and perspectives about what’s been happening in Baltimore—but more importantly, she reminds us of the intersectionality of social justice struggles, and offers her take as a one-time resident of the city: My Baltimore…

There’s lots of analysis zipping around about yesterday’s U.S. Supreme Court arguments on marriage equality. We won’t know the outcome until June—but I’m heartened by this exchange about the role of children. The discussion happened between Michigan Special Assistant Attorney General John Bursch, arguing against marriage equality, and several of the justices. Bursch says children are best raised within a marriage—but apparently doesn’t want the children of same-sex couples to reap that benefit. He admits that, on the one hand, “Same-sex couples…

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, no matter how hard we work, no matter how righteous our intentions – we will surely disappoint others. There will always be the blamers and the seekers and the players – and sometimes – when our hearts are open and our compassion overflowing – sometimes – someone will take the good you do and turn it inside out – simply to feed their ego- which cannot be tamed. I’m trying to pull things together this morning so when I get off from work this evening I don’t rush around like a chicken with my head cut off. See, my southern vocabulary is starting to find its way back in. Tomorrow we head to Nashville for a few days. And yes, I said “we.” My husband will be getting on with me as I board the silver bird that flies the people across the lands in the wee a.m. hours from PSP towards BNA. I’m thrilled he’s joining me for a meat-and-three and some good southern BBQ. He has never been to Tennessee and seeing my French man…

OMG! Zayn Malik has left One Direction! OMG! I really, really couldn’t care any less. And yes, it’s the beginning of the end. Hello! Goodbye. Boy bands come and go then come back together and break up again. A few solos efforts will ensue. Not sure if any of them would be strong enough to carry on solo. Harry Styles could because he is the face of the band from what I can tell and his voice is decent. But it is what it is. May the future tribute bands start auditioning for gigs. Boy, bye. And in other news… Real Housewives of New York starts again very soon on Bravo TV.

I just finished a day full of updating this web domain and giving it a fresher look. Between deciding what theme to choose and then tweaking it up, I am finally very happy with it all. It should be mobile-friendly and ready for micro formats more so than ever before. It had been over 4 years with the older theme so it was definitely time to do such. This one is easier on the eyes and I tied up broken links, updated content and all that jazz. Since Daylight Savings Time is now upon us, the sunshine is providing a longer day and more opportunities for progress and success. I’m using…

For anyone in the know, the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race premiering this Monday on Logo TV was filmed for almost a year ago! I know this current crop of drag starlets on Drag Race have been chomping at the bit to finally have what they already know has happened, happen for the rest of us diehard fans and newbies on the juggernaut reality competition reaching it’s 7th lap, err, cycle, ahem, season. The travel circuit has begun for all of the queens and for some of them the ride has just begun. I’ve tried to speak to a few of the Dolls from RuPaul’s Drag Race via…

Ex Machina is one of the best sci-fi films I’ve seen recently. Depression got me like....My mind is heavy. I'm somewhat emotional because I haven't taken my meds, and I can't sleep. I need to type these thoughts out, and I thought "since I feel like my life is somewhat of a disaster, let me put it all out there for my friends, followers, and future employers to see."Here:1. How did I find myself working on a particular project with my ex? The sad part is, I'd love to have more than monetary compensation for my services. Sexual frustration sucks, people.2. I didn't know how much of a trigger male sexuality is for me. It's such a trigger, I can easily slip…

I'm sure it's nice to have a team of people to keep your blog content flowing, but I wouldn't know how that feels. I'm not hating, though. I prefer the coziness of cranking out personal, thoughtful posts when I can. Here are a few things going on with me right now:- Still doing maintenance on the blog, organizing more concise categories.- I've recently been hired by my ex to assist in a music video shoot. How fun and awkward.- I still have no real job or income coming in, but no point in continually talking about it.- My Facebook page has been doing really well. I'm 26 likes away from…

Have you ever been a heartbreaker? Think carefully. Sometimes we get caught up in talking about how a guy has broken our heart to pieces, but do we ever ask ourselves if we've broken a guy's heart?I honestly can't say that I have for sure, but maybe I have, but didn't intend to do so. It's like that sometimes. You think you left a situation as cleanly and as calmly as possible, but within that process the other person is hurt beyond repair.Thinking back on different attempts to establish some sort of rapport with a guy, I may have been a little cold or distant, but I don't think it was…

Hoke gives kids someone who isn’t a parent to provide some perspective, in an unconventional format. After previous issues on Drugs, Bullies, and Perverts, in April, Hoke released “Meddling Auntie Presents: Puberty.” In the cartoon, Hoke addresses both the gender issues and same sex attractions that might manifest themselves at puberty and…

BY FRANCESCA LEWIS Lesbian.com Social media has made it easier to talk about a lot of taboo subjects – from gender equality to gay marriage to mental health – and that’s a very cool thing. With Toronto student Rupi Kaur’s taboo breaking instagram images starting some long overdue conversations about menstrual stigma, I caught up with menstruation education researcher Chella Quint to talk about her #PeriodPositive campaign. You describe yourself as a “menstruation education researcher”-  can you talk a bit about what that entails? That’s true – it’s…

BY MIKI MARKOVICH Lesbian.com In my early twenties, I went to work for the mob. OK, I didn’t know I was applying for a summer job with the mob at the time, but I did know I wanted to investigate my dark side. Growing up, I was always the good kid. I was typically a straight A student even though I attended more than 30 schools in 13 states by high school graduation. I never drank, I didn’t smoke and I wasn’t big on breaking rules, any rules. I began to wonder if I was born this boring, book loving, goody two shoes or if I was merely rebelling in a household full of violent drug users…
