We already knew about the Downton Abbey-inspired office and the $74,000 Chevy Tahoe. Now we’re learning that the vermillion office was the least of it. • FRC's ridiculously bunk new poll (*from partisan polling firm)

    G-A-Y
    26 Feb 2015 | 4:48 pm
The Family Research Council is going around pushing the following stat, so much so that they have made several memes and even created a microsite to host the associated polling: Only thing? The stat is meaningless. And deeply deceptive. It's false witness, actually. Here's why. First, we have to note that the polling firm is a noted right-wing outlet. FRC commissioned this poll through Wilson Perkins Allen, one of the big Republican polling shops out there. Which isn't surprising, since FRC is nothing if not a partisan special interest group masquerading as a faith outfit. But if you're going…

He seems to realize that keeping it out of the legal realm is the good idea. However, noted entrepreneur Mark Cuban is flat-out giving business owners advice (e.g. "just say no") that encourages them to flout nondiscriminations laws, which could very well lead to a legal fight (that the biz owner will inevitably lose): For someone whose TV role involves weighing the worth of business ideas, you sure are promoting an unsellable one yourself, Mr. Cuban. The pedigree is there, I get it. But, mostly, I just don’t care. I’d be more interested in watching a show about someone who slaps parents who don’t vaccinate their children. No, seriously, I would watch the hell out of that show. But this? Eh. Also, it’s just a given that I’d…

Aw man, I can’t believe it all ends tonight. Like my beloved “30 Rock” did, “Parks & Recreation” is ending its run after seven seasons. And tonight is the night. And, also like my beloved “30 Rock,” “Parks & Rec” never got the mass public adoration it deserved. Through its run it has been ratings challenged, but filled with overflowing heart. To those who have watched and loved it over the years it has always been a darling to us. And much of that, almost all of that, was because of Leslie Knope. Leslie Knope is that indomitable spirit. That unlimited optimism. That…

Fine, “Glee,” fine. You made me watch the big wedding. It was uneven and unrealistic, but that’s pretty much “Glee” in a nutshell. But the Brittana bits, fine, they got me, fine. They got me not necessarily because of the poignancy of the actual moment. That was ruined by having Kurt and Blaine horn in on Brittana’s big day. Seriously, how can a show this freaking gay not take the time to make two episodes dedicated to two different, independent same-sex weddings for its two different, independent same-sex couples? Also, Kurt’s jacket was otherworldly awful. It was blue shiny…

  • Scott Walker is making the wrong kind of sense

    Jon Green
    27 Feb 2015 | 7:00 am
Wisconsin and newly-ordained GOP frontrunner Governor Scott Walker got under DC’s skin again yesterday when he compared union protesters to Islamic State militants. After a Conservative Political Action Conference audience member asked him how he would handle threats from Islamic extremists, Walker gave what was on track to be a standard response before, with the kind of pause-and-smirk that can only precede a prepared one-liner, quipped that “If I can take on a 100,000 protesters, I can do the same across the world.” Watch below: Walker’s answer exploded the heads of…

There isn’t a lot of money in journalism these days. The Internet has forced the print editions of newspapers and magazines to either close down their shops or move online. And even when they do launch themselves into cyberspace, they find that people don’t want to pay for information that they can find on Twitter for free. It doesn’t help that the traditional way to monetize online content — display advertisements, like the one to the left of this sentence — aren’t very effective. Only 0.1 percent of banner ads are clicked; 85 percent of those clicks come…

Following reports that Illinois Republican Aaron Schock paid for private flights to and around his home district using taxpayer and campaign dollars, possibly in violation of House ethics rules, a new report from the Associated Press shows new spending by the Congressman on public and campaign accounts that has led our nation’s most Abercrombiefied member of Congress to lawyer up. From POLITICO: Schock has hired William McGinley and Don McGahn of the Washington law firm Jones Day to lead his legal team. Veteran GOP communications operatives Ron Bonjean and Brian Walsh are helping…

Perhaps it’s a question of age and experience, and knowing enough to know better, but the first time I saw GOP Rep. Aaron Schock’s Instagram account, I winced. Schock, age 33, has been serving as Peoria’s congressman to the US House since 2009. Young, cute, and sporting a well-sculpted physique he wasn’t shy to share with the tabloids, Schock was differently newsworthy, and seemed to genuinely relish the attention. But Washington is a fickle lover. And while the town is not nearly as bitter and back-stabbing as they depict on “Scandal” or “House…

On Sunday morning, John Kasich went on CNN’s State of the Union to talk about his cross-country “crusade” for a balanced budget, a move that has been widely interpreted as a test run for his presidential campaign. When asked directly whether he would actually run, Kasich clucked non-answers like “I don’t know” and “all my options are on the table.” In other words, he is almost certainly going to run and I, for one, hope he does. As a young, politically engaged native Ohioan, I must be one of the hundred – nay, thousand – people in the country who could actually pick…

As we approach the ending of 2014, there is a lot for which to be grateful as LGBTQ Persons. Marriage Equality still has its fight on in some states, but the battle has been won in others, and truly – I see this as going the same way the ERA did years ago. Popular opinion of the vast majority of the population in America shows support for Gay Marriage, or at the very least…indifference as to the need to oppose it. We’re almost there. Of course we know from humankind’s history that you can legislate prejudice away, but eliminating it as a practice is quite another…

February always seems to fly by for me. In case it does for you, too, and you’ve missed some Mombian posts, I thought I’d recap some of my favorites. February was the month for the American Library Association Youth Media Awards, including the Stonewall Award for LGBTQ-inclusive children’s/young adult literature. Even more impressive than the single award, in my mind, however, was the release of the latest annual Rainbow Book List of recommended titles. We still need more; but it’s gratifying to see this list grow stronger every year. Read all about it. Same-sex…

It’s been all over the news for the past few days: a discovery that within two years, could allow “same-sex parents” to both be genetically connected to their child. Most news outlets have neglected to mention one small fact, however: It will likely only work for two dads, not two moms. Nature, a well respected scientific journal, reports that scientists from the University of Cambridge and the Weizmann Institute in Israel have discovered how to use skin stem cells from adults to make egg and sperm cells. It notes that “In principle, the process could even be…

NPR’s excellent StoryCorps program last week ran a segment on Bill Jones, one of the first single men—and gay men—to adopt a child in the U.S. There’s even more to know about this pioneering gay dad, however. As the StoryCorp piece explains, California in the 1960s was having a hard time finding adoptive homes for children, especially older boys. Bill Jones decided to apply, thinking his experience as a schoolteacher would serve him well. The boy he ended up adopting had been born to a mother who was a heroin addict. The child was later diagnosed with schizophrenia…

In addition to obsessively watching the TV series we love -- The Good Wife, Downton Abbey, The Big Bang Theory -- since subscribing last year I have come to love Netflix.Yes I am talking about Netflix Canada, which granted blows compared to Netflix in the USA, however still has a good menu of new and undiscovered things to see.And yes Netflix people, if you are reading this, we know, we know, you have all ten seasons of Friends, we've seen them, you can stop telling us over and over. Interesting news story from here in calm quiet Edmonton...The student-painted mural above was put up in a local high school, with prior approval by the school principle and art teacher. Then the school got complaints and covered the mural up.Would there be complaints if it was a boy and girl kissing... would the school have covered the mural up if was a boy and girl... so, homophobic much?Kaela Wilton, a 16-year-old student at Onoway Jr/Sr High School, said she designed the mural to show support for gay people, including those who are afraid to come out.The school says it has yet to…

    27 Jan 2015 | 1:44 pm
We have just spent two weekends binge-watching  The Fall, a terrific British miniseries and its sequel starring Gillian Anderson (X Files) and Jamie Dornan (50 Shades Of Grey). Anderson is Stella Gibson, a senior police officer investigating a string of murders in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Dornan is the serial killer she is pursuing. Anderson's Gibson is a smart strong confident sexual career woman, and the actress is amazing in this. Dornan, a model turned sex symbol turned actor, shows he can act.  The first season is the deliberately paced discovery as they learn about…

  • Duggar Daughter Rants: Sexual 'Sinners' Going to Hell for Their 'Lifestyle'

    John M. Becker
    27 Feb 2015 | 7:00 am
"One of the most quoted verses from the Bible is Matthew 7:1 'Judge not!' Whenever someone speaks out against something that God calls sin, 'Don't judge!' can be heard coming from a thousand lips. People don't like to have other people disapprove of the way they're choosing to live their life... "In this world, people have seared their consciences. The standard of what is 'ok' or 'permissible' in our society today, hardly reflects God's standard. People are content to live on in lying, cursing, pride, anger, bitterness, disrespecting of parents, lust, pornography, fornication, adultery, and…

Yesterday, the Arkansas Senate Judiciary Committee voted down HB 1228, which would have made it legal for people and businesses to discriminate if they said they were doing it for religious reasons. The Associated Press reports: The Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the "conscience protection" measure, a day after retail giant Wal-Mart said the measure sent the wrong message about its home state and Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he had reservations about the bill... Opponents called the measure a thinly veiled way to allow businesses to discriminate against the lesbian, gay, bisexual…
  • Pope Francis Has Transparent Views on Trans People

    Rev Irene Monroe
    26 Feb 2015 | 11:00 am
Pope Francis is a complicated (if not confusing) pontiff to the LGBTQ community -- especially to the transgender community. On the surface Francis displays a pastoral countenance to his papacy that extends to all of our community. Remember the pope's remarks when flying home after a weeklong visit to Brazil in 2013 (which set off global shockwaves) after he was queried about the much talked-about "gay lobby" in the Vatican: "When I meet a gay person, I have to distinguish between their being gay and being part of a lobby. If they accept the Lord and have good will, who am I to judge them?

    26 Feb 2015 | 9:00 am
"Regardless of where one stands on Ukraine or Vladimir Putin, just for a moment consider where the pro-family movement would be if it hadn't been for the Ukraine coup. Russia would still be (relatively speaking) a respected member of the international community offering an alternative, genuinely pro-family model for social policy. There would likely be at least a half-dozen nations which would have adopted the anti-propaganda law for themselves (with many more considering it) and there would be a healthy international debate raging on pro-family vs LGBT visions for the future. I believe the…
  • People-Powered Campaign Pushes Back Against 'Mayor 1%'

    Terrance Heath
    26 Feb 2015 | 7:00 am
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel should be taking a victory lap right now. Heading into Tuesday's municipal elections, he had everything going for him that an incumbent officeholder could hope for, but a populist uprising still forced him into a runoff -- in a re-election campaign he was almost certain to win. He had money. Just as he parlayed his Washington connections into paying clients during two and a half years working on Wall Street after leaving the Clinton administration (despite lacking an MBA or any prior banking experience), Emanuel converted his Wall Street connections into a $30…

The list of famous African-Americans who are believed to have been bisexual include Malcolm X, Jean-Michel Basquiat, James Baldwin, Josephine Baker, and “Empress of the Blues” Bessie Smith. A number of notable African-Americans still living have alluded to their bisexuality though they don’t publicly embrace the bisexual label. For example novelist Alice Walker, who is quoted as saying, “I’m curious. I’m open to the spirit of a person whether that’s a man or a woman or whoever, that’s not what’s important to me. What’s important is the spirit.”…

But as advanced as current prosthetics are, they still have their limitations. When a case of TV gear toppled onto the forearm of CNN anchor Miles O’Brien, he never imagined the injury would lead to the amputation of his left arm above the elbow. Nor did he imagine having to retell that story for the rest of his life. Photographer Devin Mitchell began taking mirror portraits of military veterans as a way to show the “double lives” that they lead. In uniform, they’re nearly indistinguishable from the other men and women serving alongside them but, out of uniform, each has a life with identities and struggles all their own. For LGBT service members, it’s especially hard — they must first choose whether to risk ridicule and harm by serving openly, and then face further discrimination when they return to jobs and public places at home. Even though it has about been four years since the…

By: Erika Star It’s award season and, after a number of noticeably more subdued award shows (see: boring), many questioned, “why all the yawn-inducing performances?” “WHERE IS THE FABULOUSNESS?” If the Grammys couldn’t bring it, if Kanye’s antics were met with nothing more than a resounding eye roll, it seems futile to hold out hope for the notoriously more buttoned-up Oscars. Especially when, compared to last few years, there is a stark lack of diversity within this year’s nominees. Not that the Oscars are known for representing the 99%, but this year’s nominees skew…

HH used to ask me how he was supposed to know if I was ‘the one’. It’s probably safe to say we have our answer and I’m not sure words would do it justice. Time spent does. Two things happened this week that revolve around the idea of living a simple life. Okay, maybe three things because I also finally ordered a used copy of Robbie Nevil’s first CD. Of the many songs I really, really like on the album, Simple Life is one I go back to often. So, yes, three things. I watch a decent amount of Chinese movies and not all the martial arts kind either, thank you. One that piqued my curiosity a while back was A…

There’s no real way to predict it. In any case, last week’s was the deep thought, digging around, and having a bit of a rant sort of thing. “As to the general question about the sudden boom in homosexual movies, this should probably be said: A dozen movies about the gay life may seem a trifle much in one year, but it must be remembered that something like 300 movies are released annually. And considering that better a quarter of Kinsey’s female respondents and more than half his male informants admitted to having had some homosexual experience, 12 films about the subject does not seem excessive - especially when you recall that through all of movie history prior to 1968 that matter remained essentially untouched. I am now closer to my forties than what I am to my twenties.  It is kind of depressing because I still don’t always feel or act like an adult or act my age for that matter.  In just a few years I will be forty and be expected to have gotten my shit together.  To a certain degree I am ready for it but mostly it terrifies me.  Fortysomething has always seemed so old to me especially when I was in my twenties.  But now that I am almost there myself it doesn’t seem that old anymore.  Funny how life works, isn’t it?In the last few years of my thirties I have…

Madonna has been in the spotlight of late (nothing new there), thanks in part to her fab Grammy Awards performance, and "not so much thanks" for her unfortunate tumble from the stage yesterday at The Brit Awards. Her Madge-esty said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone that even when she delivers a great performance she gets flack about whether or not she's "acting her age.""It's still the one area where you can totally discriminate against somebody," she says, "and talk shit. Because of their age. Only females, though. Not males. So in that respect we still live in a very sexist…
  • Rep. Aaron Schock Gets The Daily Show Treatment

    26 Feb 2015 | 2:11 pm
So, a few weeks ago an innocuous "style" piece for the Washington Post brought to light the latest decor choices made by (totally not gay) Congressman Aaron Schock of Illinois. Not exactly the kind of attention he was looking for probably, and it ended with his communications guy resigning (albeit for reasons in addition to handling the story badly). But the story launched a look into his spending habits - spending money other than his own. And so, now there is a congressional inquiry/possible audit into some expenses that have been covered with inappropriate funds. Word comes now that he's…

The first day of 2015 and the first (official) day of dressing from a 37 piece capsule wardrobe brought an afternoon of hangover recovery with some of my favourite people. Imagine, rehashing the gossip of the night before, copious amounts of restorative presecco and watching ridiculous videos on YouTube. I spend a great deal of time watching YouTube videos, sometimes to a fault. I never get any work done because I'm busy watching a "Let's Play" video, or watching people do even more basic things via Buzzfeed videos. With that said, amid the attention grabbing videos, featuring countdown lists of all things random, the ad above somehow crept through on my TV screen, and I'm glad it did. After seeing the ad run in between the several videos I binge watched, I was inspired to learn more about this particular campaign. The Greater Than AIDS Organization, which is a leading public…

BY FRANCESCA LEWIS Lesbian.com Thirty years have passed since British lesbian writer Jeanette Winterson published her first novel, “Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.” A semi-autobiographical experiment in meta-fiction, the novel is a truth-bending rewriting of Winterson’s own childhood as an adopted daughter of a domineering Pentecostal mother. Covering her life — or a version of it — from age seven to 16, it tells the tragic, witty and inspiring tale of her coming of age in this strange, oppressive environment. Winterson was only 24 when she wrote it, having…
