U.S. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) says federal aid to his home state after the tornado should be offset by spending cuts elsewhere. We’ll see how well the ideological integrity holds up if offsets aren’t quickly found, but nevertheless, the question of how to fund disaster relief is increasingly urgent. It arose late last year when Superstorm Sandy ravaged the East Coast. And though we cannot know whether man-made climate change was specifically responsible for either of those acts of nature, we do know federal spending to cope with extreme weather events has been rising. Indeed,…

There are numerous people that have varied opinions on same sex marriage in the US. Same sex couples have a hard time adopting children if they are not married; if marriage is legalized in all states, then families can be built. The economy can also see growth with same sex marriage by bringing couples’ incomes together. Marriage licenses and higher income tax from…

    21 May 2013 | 12:00 am
I grew up in the Midwest, where tornado season blew in every year with its warning tickers on the TV and sirens across the city. I remember afternoons spent watching cartoons with my “Go Basket” next to me filled with the essentials – my best flashlight, my most beloved book, my favorite stuffed animal. I remember middle-of-the-night runs to the basement where my PJ-clad parents shepherded us – sleepy kids, barking dogs – into the cold safety of the basement. I remember the calm, sickly grey-green the sky always turned before the winds came. And, as I’m writing this, back in my…

Marriage equality? You betcha. Welcome, lucky No. 12. This week Minnesota made it an even dozen, following the small flurry of states to pass marriage equality this year (high fives, Rhode Island and Delaware!) Sure, there are still 38 to go. But the momentum is unmistakable and our friend inertia knows that bodies in motion tend to stay in motion. So let’s all make like Mary Tyler Moore and throw out proverbial hats into the sky with joy at a more equal world we’re creating today for all of our tomorrows. Also, you gotta love a state with hot dishes and rainbow bridges.

Fuck wank bugger shitting arse head and hole. I am so goddammed pissed they canceled “Go On.” I mean, seriously. Did you have that much going for you in the comedy department, NBC? Sure, you wisely renewed “Parks and Recreation” and “Community” (well, depending on how you liked the Dan Harmon-less incarnation). But axing “Go On” just as it had begun to really find its groove and could become something truly great. YOU FUCKING SUCK. I now demand that Julie White’s character Anne be wholesale moved over to another show – any other show. Comedy, drama, crime procedural.

Some lighter news as a break from more serious stuff: It’s been a number of years since my son watched preschool TV shows, and I’m generally glad I don’t have their earworm jingles in my head anymore. (Pre-1980s Sesame Street songs are the exceptions.) I was unexpectedly delighted, though, to hear that two actors playing “Steve” of Blue’s Clues fell in love and married each other. The New York Times has a video of actor Tom Mizer and his understudy in Blue’s Clues Live, Travis McGhie, explaining their initially tense relationship and eventual romance.

A Texas judge has ruled that a lesbian mom’s partner of three years move out, because of a “morality clause” in the mom’s divorce papers (from a previous opposite-sex marriage). The clause requires that no one she has a non-marital ”dating or intimate relationship” with may stay in the home after 9 p.m. if the children are present, reports the Dallas Voice. And of course, same-sex couples are forbidden by law to marry or have their marriages recognized in Texas. The good news, such as it is, for Carolyn Compton, her partner Page Price, and the…

This is an extremely short-sighted and dangerous game that should shame the LGBT movement, but, unfortunately, it's become a rallying cry for some leaders. It’s often said the two things you never want to see being made are laws and sausage. Sadly, binational same-sex couples were the sacrificial lambs in today’s sausage-making legislation. Democratic Senators Patrick Leahy, Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, Dick Durbin, and even Al Franken all agreed to not include protections for LGBT couples that essentially mirrored language in the Uniting All Families Act (UAFA) in the hopes their Republican colleagues — the minority — will allow them to avoid a filibuster and pass (almost) comprehensive immigration reform.

    18 May 2013 | 7:20 pm
Part of me thinks this post should be merely a photo of Jenn and I holding a copy of today’s newspaper, our eyes pleading for rescue. We remind ourselves daily, ‘We are the grown-ups. We are taller.’ Some days it works. Other days I sneak a little Malibu into my blueberry lemonade. The Bear is 4-1/2 years old now. She’ll be five in August. FIVE. She has grown into a delightful version of herself, thanks mostly to her amazing preschool teacher. She uses manners forty percent of the time, “brushes” her own teeth in the morning and really only melts down when…

She moved fast, her fluorescent pink sweatshirt with the psychedelic pony splashed across the front becoming  a streamer of light as she disappeared into the crowd. Jenn was ten feet behind me, disembarking the floor piano. The Bear was ten feet in front of me, half-posed to take off with her sister toward the sensory bin, half-frozen since her sister had other plans. It happened in a flash, like I’ve read in too many checkout lane magazines. The Bean was gone. My mom told me a story when I was little — or maybe I overheard her telling someone else — about a little girl my…

There have been many moments recently when I’ve looked at my kids and wondered how they arrived here in my life. Or maybe that’s not it. I know how they arrived here, via social worker, after paperwork, in a compact car at night. It’s more a confusion about how I arrived here, playing the part of a grown-up who lives in a two-story colonial with a wife and two small people whose suns rise and set to me. My kids are not the strangers. I feel like I am. The last year has been busy. The busiest. Despite doubting it every other day, I have somehow managed to have it all. A…

We always stay at the Holiday Inn Express. No reason, other than it’s become a thing. And the mini-fridge. The Bean slept in our laundry basket her first night with us. Our social worker had advised us not to buy anything prior to placement since we were open to accepting children up to age four. Our social worker was a moron. The Bean slept on the floor in a laundry basket and the Bear slept on our queen-size guest bed. I didn’t sleep at all that first night, just three feet from the Bean and, though Jenn drifted off at her post with the Bear far across the apartment, she remained vigilant, coverless, leaping to all fours  and growling protectively when I whispered to her in the darkness…

The 2012-2013 TV season is winding down, and while I have not watched some acclaimed hits like Breaking Bad, I have watched my share of good and bad TV, so here are my picks for what entertained me this season: Best Comedy: Big Bang Theory -- Howard coming back from space, Amy Farrah-Fowler's bigger role, and the usual geeky humour had me laughing out loud. Best Drama: Sure it's not Shakespeare, but I wouldn't watch Shakespeare every week... and season two of the revamped super-soap Dallas was suspenseful, sexy and sometimes just funny. Beautiful rich people sleeping around and stabbing…

One of the great things about video-on-demand is access to movies that we could not otherwise see, that likely never came to our city, such as Safety Not Guaranteed, a 2012 well-reviewed little independent flick that won a screenwriting award at the Sundance Film Festival and that never came here. This is a smart, funny, sweet and ultimately touching film about love and outcasts. Safety Not Guaranteed is about a man named Kenneth…

One of my favourite things about all our movie channels and video-on-demand TV options is discovering little seen movies, or catching the big flicks I missed the first time around. I just discovered last year's little-seen Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, with Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. While promoted as a comedy, this is more of a wistful drama... and I found it enchanting. In Seeking..., An asteroid named "Matilda" is on a collision course towards Earth and in three weeks the world will come to an end...  so what would you do? The film's primary characters, Carell's…

    21 May 2013 | 12:30 pm
The LGBT news has been chock full of articles and op-eds decrying Senator Chuck Schumer's reluctance to include same-sex couples in the current immigration reform package. Advocates insist that the right of binational couples to sponsor their foreign partners for citizenship is a must-have to get their blessing. This is an extremely short-sighted and dangerous game that should shame the LGBT movement, but, unfortunately, it's become a rallying cry for some leaders. Once again, the needs of gay couples are being put ahead of the welfare of thousands of LGBT people. Continue reading "Same-Sex…

Anyway my point here: Willow does get gayer too everytime I re-watch Buffy. Need proof? Willow is already wearing a perfectly pride conform outfit even before she’s hooking up with Oz. Oh and remember the episode Halloween (Season 2, Episode 6): Willow outs herself as Xena fangirl. I kinda miss the late 90s.

Be honest, how many of you reading this column would have been charged with “lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12-16 years of age” when you were 18? This is assuming of course that you got caught, and the state you lived in had such laws. Gay sex, straight sex, touching, fondling, groping, licking, sucking – I’m talking sex of any kind. How many of you would right now be registered as a sex offender?

In our democracy, there is a sharing of power between three branches of the government and also between the states and the Federal Government. Issue advocates may seek a singular decision from the highest court in the land that "changes everything," but this is inconsistent with the very foundation of how our democracy works. Progress on an issue must occur at the state level, as well as at the Federal level simultaneously, and within public sentiment and cultural change must accompany legislative and legal victories.

And yes I’m talking about his pecs. Delicious. It takes something really special in our queer culture today to grab us by the balls and say, “Buy this supermarket dressing because he is hot!” This new commercial below makes me giggle, with girly glee. Slap that dough, you man beast. Anderson Davis is just too hot for words. Housewives love him while gay men worship. Obviously…
  • STEVEN MICHAEL IS MY NAME, BOO!

    STEVEN
    27 Apr 2013 | 8:51 am
Steven Michael is my name and that’s the way it is. I Google’d myself (insert dirty joke here) and man, I came up feeling ehhh. Where am I? I’m here, dammit! There’s my social media moments Twitter and Facebook but Lady Google has slapped me with the shade of it all. I blog my finger tips to their very nubs and Googlezilla really serves a platter of crickets to many of us in the internet world. If you’re not a major player in the game it’s difficult to get noticed. Oh, Mommie Googlest… I am not, one of your FANS! Hey… All Tea, All Shade. Eye…
  • WHO WILL WIN RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE 5?

    23 Apr 2013 | 7:17 am
Good Morning! Quick apologizes for not knocking out something new here at IAM as of late but things have been quite busy. Our gay popular culture is just buzzing today. It’s almost too much for one gay man to handle! I’ve actually sat back and enjoyed this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and haven’t blogged too much about the show other than publishing three fierce interviews with Top 5 Doll Coco Montrese, talented through her dancing toes Alyssa Edwards and darling Ladykin Jade Jolie. Again, thanks to her their generous team at All Starr Management for making all of that…

  • Flutters and pops

    M
    13 May 2013 | 8:37 pm
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been feeling little flutters and pops in my belly. Our little Sticky is making his/her presence felt and it’s so cute. I’ve not really had a big kick yet, but I love the little flutters and pops. It feels like little butterflies in my tummy. I can’t wait for K to feel them too. I’m really looking pregnant now. I can no longer hide my bump – not that I want to! Every now and then K looks at me and says…”wow you really look pregnant!” I’ve even bought some maternity clothes off eBay as most of my…
  • Baby Bump

    5 May 2013 | 4:03 pm
So I thought it was about time I shared some baby bump pics. It’s only really been in the last few weeks that I’ve popped out. I’m feeling lots of beautiful flutters and popcorn in my belly when Sticky moves! A couple of nights ago I was relaxing on the couch. Our dog had her head resting on my tummy, fast asleep, when Sticky decided to kick. It was a bit more than the usual pop or flutter that I normally feel and our dog felt it too. She flinched, woke up for a second then went back into her slumber. It was so cute and so exciting to see as I really really can’t wait…
  • Ah-choo!

    29 Apr 2013 | 10:08 pm
So even though I feel a million times better than I did in the first trimester, this second trimester has brought with it really bad sinus and frequent sneezing. When I say frequent sneezing, I mean probably about 10-20 sneezing fits every day, with each fit having about 10-20 sneezes! A whole lot of sneezing! I wonder if our Sticky will recognise me more by my sneezing than by my actual voice when he/she makes her/his way into the world? At first I thought it was just my hay-fever, which I do suffer from, but after a bit of research I’ve found out that this is a common symptom, if not…
  • It’s nice to feel normal again!

    M
    28 Apr 2013 | 5:23 pm
It was almost like someone flicked a switch right on 14 weeks. No more nausea and fatigue is minimal, I almost feel normal again. I even had a night out with the girls on the weekend at a great restaurant in the city. We didn’t get home until midnight, which is a very late night for me considering I’ve mostly been going to bed around 8.30pm. Along with feeling better, I’ve got back into the knitting. I had a break for a while, whist I felt awful. I knitted two sets of booties (pictured) on the weekend for a friend of mine who is 6 months pregnant. I plan to make more for our…
  • 14.5 weeks and lots of excitement

    24 Apr 2013 | 8:36 pm
So much excitement in our household at the moment and so much happening. I’m now 14.5 weeks and am starting to get a little baby bump and I’m now anxiously awaiting that first flutter of movement. We have just arrived back from a bit of a road trip to Melbourne, where we visited my best friend, who is 18 weeks pregnant. We have been friends since we were 15 and we find it quite amazing that in all the years we have known each other (23 years) we both managed to get pregnant at the same time. Our other good friend is also pregnant (6 months). K thinks it’s a bit like the…

  • Spanish Promoters Let Fans Pay What They Want For Live Show

Concerts are a way for music lovers to show their appreciation of a hard-working band and for musicians to make more money in the depreciative music industry. However as demand for music shows surges, ticket prices have escalated considerably, and now fans can’t always afford to see all the bands they love. So Spanish promoters Caravana de […]

  • Just a few random thoughts

    3 May 2013 | 12:46 pm
Blogging for me used to be easy. Whatever came to my mind, I'd go right to my computer and post it. I don't know how I was able to go to work, go to school, try to lead a social life, and blog back in my early 20's, but now, my energy is low, and I've allowed me job to pretty much dictate my creativity and social development. As much as I'm happy for any public figure who decides to come out to the media, no matter how famous or unknown, I'm still underwhelmed by the overall action. Whether genuine, malicious (jaded lover), or ostentatious, I can't say what intentions lie behind these…
  • The family tree is only as strong as its roots

    14 Apr 2013 | 7:10 pm
It's been hard to focus lately, so the writing and creativity has stopped, the outreach has stopped, and the overall motivation to expand my horizons has come to a complete halt. There's a list of things I need to get done, as well as things I want to do, but it seems my timing is all off. Funny enough, I woke up one day in my apartment, and it seemed that all the various electronic devices were out of sync in time; it sort of freaked me out. The clock on my fireplace was seven minutes faster than the clock on my Roku player, which was two minutes slower than the clock on my laptop. I kind of…

Not a fan of it,I'm getting my finances in order because I really am going to do away with my current job and begin my freelance writing career.I've enrolled in a freelance writing class just as a stepping stone and networking tool toward reaching my goal.My interest in poetry is slowly creeping back to me. • 11 unfinished posts, which one should I finish first?

    21 Mar 2013 | 9:22 am
Sometimes depression will affect my productivity. I'll have my up phases of knocking tasks out without any issues, but then I'll have my down phases where I either get overwhelmed with the work I've accumulated, or I develop a can't-be-bothered type of attitude, preferring sleep over anything else. Nonetheless, this is the life that chose me, so I gotta thug it out the best way I can. With that said, my attention to certain things gets sidetracked, and my main focus then becomes finding ways to snap out of my funk. As much as I should use this blog to write more when I am going through these…
  • Nativity of naivety (Lecture 2 - Id[entity])

    6 Mar 2013 | 8:21 pm
It's very easy to feel like you're damaged beyond repair. That mind frame resides in a good bit of us, you know, the proverbial half man trying to be made whole, and we choose how to deal with it in difference ways. Our vices at times can sustain us, but it's only temporary in most cases. Food, drink, art, sex, it's whatever keeps us busy enough not to think. However, not even the strongest vices can help us cope with our cognitive reasoning once we are left in solitude. Based on my solitude, I find myself angry, and I just want to let it all go. Been in this position before, and I went…
