Andy Mientus, Michael Arden Less than a decade since it premiered on Broadway, Spring Awakening, thanks to its relatable storyline and electrifying rock score, is already considered one of the bona fide musical theater classics of this century. Still, it isn’t too soon for the Tony Award-winning show, brilliantly adapted from a 19th century German drama, to get a thoroughly modern twist. With the official entry of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont into the 2016 presidential race comes an atypical challenger for Hillary Clinton. Unlike traditional presidential aspirants, Sanders opened his campaign by sharpening his rhetoric rather than trying to dull it down. While this may mean Clinton will not have to worry about being outflanked by Sanders for the so-called (and largely illusory) “center,” it certainly means that Clinton’s alignment with Wall Street and Corporate America is going to prove problematic in the Democratic primary given her record. This is…

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, no matter how hard we work, no matter how righteous our intentions – we will surely disappoint others. There will always be the blamers and the seekers and the players – and sometimes – when our hearts are open and our compassion overflowing – sometimes – someone will take the good you do and turn it inside out – simply to feed their ego- which cannot be tamed. My parents taught me to be kind. They taught me to share my Easter candy even though I knew good and well I could handle it all by myself. Moving from town to…

Damn. Damn, damn, damn, damn. Oh, Amy Winehouse. Damn. It still seems unfathomable that we lost her four years ago. Cruel even. Of course, that’s the selfish part of me talking. I’m mad we lost her music. But the greater loss, of course, is the human one. This woman, this all-too-human woman became lost in the blinding, relentless spotlight that is fame. And we saw it all happening, yet could do nothing to stop it.Seeing the trailer for her new documentary, “Amy,” brings it all rushing back. Her meteoric rise. Her magnetic charisma. Her undeniable artistry. Her seemingly inevitable…

So here she paying (inadvertent) tribute to the late Ben E. King (who passed away after this appearance) and the beautiful “Stand By Me.” Lovely doesn’t even cover it. Now that’s how you start off your week right.

  • Pew: LGB Americans much less religious than heterosexuals

    Jon Green
    29 May 2015 | 5:00 am
On Tuesday, Pew released data showing that lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans are nearly twice as likely as heterosexual citizens to identify as religiously unaffiliated, and more than twice as likely to identify as atheist or agnostic. While a majority of the LGB community remained affiliated with a religious faith, the majority was a narrow 59-41 split unaffiliated. For heterosexual Americans, the breakdown was 78-22 affiliated/unaffiliated. 72% of heterosexuals identified as Christian, compared to just 48% of LGB Americans. Religiously affiliated LGB respondents were also less likely…
  • Reminder: Ann Coulter is probably faking it

    28 May 2015 | 9:00 am
Ann “Coultergeist” Coulter is out with a new book, ¡Adios, America! The Left’s Plan to Turn our Country into a Third World Hellhole. If you didn’t know better, the title may leave you confused as to whether she means that America is doomed, or that the conservative firebrand is immigrating to Mexico. Unfortunately, it isn’t the latter. The book is, predictably, a racist screed against the “browning” of America — going after the latino community for attempting to destroy America from within. Aided and abetted by the Democratic Party, of…
  • Data currently unavailable for “one person, one vote” Supreme Court case

    Jon Green
    28 May 2015 | 7:00 am
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court announced that it will reconsider whether one person really does equal one vote, as plaintiffs in Evenwel v. Abbott argue that the current standard of using total population to determine legislative districts gives unfair electoral advantages to people who can’t vote. The “one person, one vote” principle was established in 1964, and since then it has been held that states are allowed to decide for themselves how best to implement it. Like Texas, most have chosen total population. If the Court sides with the plaintiffs in Evenwel, it could…
  • Watchdog groups calling for DOJ to investigate Jeb Bush for campaign finance violations

    Jon Green
    28 May 2015 | 5:00 am
Yesterday, CBS News reported that two campaign finance watchdog groups, Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center, have officially asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether presidential candidate Jeb Bush is illegally coordinating with Right to Rise, the super PAC supporting his candidacy. As the groups state in a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Bush and Right to Rise “are engaged in a scheme to allow unlimited contributions to be spent directly on behalf of the Bush campaign and thereby violate the candidate contribution limits enacted to prevent corruption and…
  • By the Ruling Class: Charles Murray’s anti-democratic revolution

    Jon Green
    27 May 2015 | 7:00 am
Charles Murray has been a Very Big Deal in conservative circles for quite some time now. Before he made waves in 1994 with The Bell Curve, in which he made the case that black people have worse economic outcomes in part because they have worse genes, he helped craft the welfare reform agenda that would permeate American policy throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. That Jeb Bush is willing to call the proponent of pseudo-eugenics one of his favorite authors should be enough to establish how respected Murray’s work is within the conservative community. When he writes, they read.

Here’s what’s been going on ’round and about in LGBTQ parenting lately, complete with supermodels. Being an Ally and Teaching Acceptance Linda Rodriguez McRobbie of Slate is a straight mom and ally who wants to raise her son to be open and accepting of LGBTQ people and different family structures. She interviewed me for some ideas in her latest article. I should also note that one of the top commenters on her piece asks why she never considers the possibility that her son will be LGBTQ himself. I think that’s a misleading question. She can raise him to be…

If the 1980s were the halcyon pioneering days for bears, and San Francisco once again the gold rush capital of this ursine Wild West, then the 1990s were the era of settlers, homesteading the new community, pushing the cyber frontiers, consolidating loose social groups into more formal ones, bringing order and stability to the new community. In a repeat of familiar history, the subsequent decade…

This is a man who thinks that Black families were better off during America’s slave days, that all pornography and consensual gay sex between adults should be illegal, among other hateful bat-shit-crazy belief. Does Calvin Harris Suck Now That He’s Big Time? Like this Article Like Unicorn BootyWhat a quick rise to the top it’s been for Calvin Harris. Born Adam Wiles, he released his first album, I Created Disco, in 2007. The album was a bleepy-bloopy, quirky collection of electroclash songs that stood out amongst the chart hits of its day. It did reasonably well, but after listening to the album, no one would have predicted that Calvin Harris would go on to rule the world. He followed it up in 2009 with Ready For the Weekend, an album that polished his sound and gave him his first #1 in the…

5 Ways The Westboro Baptist Church Is Actually Good Like this Article Like Unicorn BootyIf there was an award handed out for the most hated group of all time (Nazis excluded), it would definitely have to go to members of the Westboro Baptist Church. For decades now, they’ve picketed funerals of fallen soldiers and protested against any modicum of LGBT equality using day-glo signs stating that OBAMA IS THE DEVIL! But if we take a second to see beneath their vitriol, we’ll find something more beneficial. Aside from their hateful attempts to mock civil rights, the Church has done a…

Now it’s something I consciously plan and look forward to. Nothing to do on Sunday afternoon? Better pencil in four non-stop hours of a House of Cards. Rain keeping us inside? Chances are you saw the title and wondered “WTF?” Yeah, I would too. Sadly, it’s one of those times you needed to be there when it was uttered. Incidentally, G.A. is the one who uttered it while in a group of folks in Austin last weekend and it was damn funny. I can’t remember what provoked the response, but I immediately knew I was going to use it as a blog post title. For the record, she gave me permission. And please don’t worry, G.A. Hauser isn’t Satan, a close relative, or even a follower. I don’t even think she’s evil, and I can say that because I’ve met evil. Well,…

Some things just don’t mix, then there are things only reputed not to mix. Or sometimes they just don’t. But then sometimes they do. It really depends on the situation, I think, and who your highly paid European chef or barely legal bartender are. As for other situations, I’ve been told that M/M authors and M/F authors don’t always mix, so I was just the tiniest bit hesitant going into this past weekend’s Austin Author Affair. Fifty authors were invited to sign and of those, there were perhaps 6 or 7 of us who wrote M/M. What’s a cute lad with a gorgeous half Chinese husband to…

They, my friends, say I should be more positive, only I am, quite honestly, afraid of getting my hopes up. I feel we’re at the point now where no matter which side wins, the losing side will make the winning side wish they’d lost. I fear it’s going to get ugly, and I just don’t have a clue how this is going to turn out, especially with so many things coming out in the media. It’s one thing to read a news story about something…

No. I mean Canadia. Americans live in America, so Canadians must therefore live in Canadia. Don’t mess with a writer. We understand common sense…or at least enough of it to get us into trouble. It’s fun just to do it or just to get even for something they either do or don’t realize they’ve done to annoy you…er, me. Hey, sometimes breathing the same air around me is all it takes. I’m not picky. I’m just looking for memorable characters. I’d encourage you to check it out. The author paints a clear picture of how the supposed goals of the group and their activities don’t seem to be aligned. I want to[Read More...]
  • Is the Wizard of Oz behind the Delta Foundation facade?

  • The Protest Against Delta Foundation: Why is this happening?

    Thomas Waters
    20 May 2015 | 6:10 am
One of the single most important things that ought to grow from this protest is for people to come understand what is happening and why. We have to hear and grasp the motivations and underlying feelings if we are to move ahead and affect change that makes what comes better and more inclusive than what has been.

Even after all these years of accepting and understanding my sexuality, I still feel completely misunderstood, and what scares me about this is that I don't feel that I ever will be understood. Here I was thinking that coming out of the closet would make me feel like a freer individual, but what I've realized is that it has only made me feel more alone. Those I used to love devotedly, still held fear in their heart, not able to accept their sexuality. So, as I progressed in my acceptance, they slowly backed away, leaving me feeling all by myself again. There's no way for me to hop back into…

It's been 7 months since I've been physically intimate with a guy.7 months ago, I was in a relationship. Since the end of that relationship, I haven't had much desire to be as passionate or as physical as I'd like. The love is still there for my ex; however, I'd be stupid to feel like there's a chance for me to hop his bones when he least expects it. I hate myself for feeling this way. However, as the months creep on by, I find myself becoming more and more thirsty for male body parts to grope. Every waking moment, I think about how my lips should be touching another guy's lips. I toss and…

So much has been going on as of late, and I don't know where to begin. I guess it's good that things have been happening, but the only downside is that I have not had the time or energy to write or promote my blogs. To think, I used to be a champion multitasker. Now, all I want to do is take naps, catch up on YouTube videos, and drink ginger ale.Eh, what I'm learning is to continue putting my best work forward, and hope for the best in the process. I know I was a bowl of stress, but I'm beginning to adapt a more calm demeanor. Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm all full of zen-like peace.

I need to type these thoughts out, and I thought "since I feel like my life is somewhat of a disaster, let me put it all out there for my friends, followers, and future employers to see."Here:1. How did I find myself working on a particular project with my ex? The sad part is, I'd love to have more than monetary compensation for my services. Sexual frustration sucks, people.2. I didn't know how much of a trigger male sexuality is for me. It's such a trigger, I can easily slip…

When aspiring lawyer Lucca (Sinha Gierke) begins to experience something of an existential crisis and stumbles into a little trouble, she is sentenced to a few…
