  • Only In White Gay Land: Anderson Cooper Attacks Obama Over Gay Marriage—-But Won’t Come Out Himself

    RENWLs Daily Posts!
    Derrick Mathis
    8 May 2012 | 2:00 pm
No, he’s not waving at throngs of gay folks at a gay pride parade. Yea, it’s common knowledge among LGBTs that CNN’s Anderson Cooper is gay.  Speaking for ourselves, frankly we don’t care if he never comes out. But dude, if you’re going to get up on a pulpit about Obama’s silence on gay marriage…like…WTF? Cooper’s silence on his sexuality wouldn’t be so bad if fellow colleague Don Lemon hadn’t come out with such drama ‘n’ pomp last year (a book, scads of interviews, attacks on black women, etc). Even Queen…

  • 'Gaydar' More Effective On Women, Says Study

    Andrew Belonsky
    16 May 2012 | 12:10 pm
Psychologists fascinated by gaydar recently offered over 120 college students pictures of gay men and women to determine whether the gaydar instinct differs between gender. Turns out it does. In the study, 129 college students viewed 96 photos each of young adult men and women who identified themselves as gay or straight. Concerned that facial hair, glasses, makeup and piercings might provide easy clues, the researchers only used photos of people who did not have such embellishments. They cropped the grayscale photos so that only faces, not hairstyles, were visible. For women's faces,…

Both spelt out their concern that Greece should remain a full member of the common European currency, while promising to consider new measures to revive economic growth in the country. But they also agreed that Athens must carry out the austerity…

While there are both pluses and some minuses to being seen as the clear front runner, on net it is a positive. After all people want to bank a winner. People are also much less likely to donate money or volunteer for a candidate if they appear to be a lost cause. It seems the Obama campaign shares this opinion about the benefits…

Washington Post columnist Robert Samuelson says that people are taking away the wrong lessons from JPMorgan’s $2 billion loss on a proprietary trade gone bad. He has some legitimate points but carries his case too far. First, he notes that this bet did not threaten either the banking system or JPMorgan. He points out that JPMorgan is a huge and highly profitable bank. Its books look to be in reasonably good shape. A $2 billion loss will be felt, but this is less than the normal profit in a quarter. It does not come close to…

I teased it yesterday. Now today, Maine's "marriage protectors" have launched their gaymarriagehouseofhorrors.com site with this thoroughly reductive take on red state "virility" versus blue state pageantry: Um, yeah, I actually have a question. I want to know: Why are these folks so insistent on glamorizing cigarette smoking to children? I mean, sure, applying grease paint and fairy wings consumes a few hours of one's time. But ciggies? All kinds of demonstrable perils attached to that lifestyle. Why ya gotta indoctrinate the poor kids with your tobacco lifestyle, Maine marriage warriors?!

The top campaign figures talked openly about wanting to "save" or "change" us, and they made no bones about pitting the bible against our supposed "lifestyles." It was truly chilling to witness, both that it was happening and that the local mainstream media was giving it so much of…

Opinion: When Tracy Thorne, a Navy fighter pilot, came out of the closet on live television to Nightline's Ted Koppel in 1992, it was a defining moment in the fight for open military service and one of the transformative moments in my then-young activism. In the still-heady days after Bill Clinton's defeat of George Bush, it was a moment that felt like a tipping point, proof that the change we saw coming was around the corner. How could it not be, with honorable people like Thorne demonstrating their patriotism and dedication to service of their country? Those hopes were dashed pretty quickly…

Their "gaydar" persisted even when they saw the photos upside-down, and gay versus straight judgments were more accurate for women's faces than for men's.
  • Obama speech: change for gay parents

    16 May 2012 | 8:50 am
Monday morning, as we scrambled to get Luna off to school, there came a moment when the timeline of my life leapt into fast-forward. I was carrying around an iPad turned to CNN, checking in to see what news awaited me at work, while Luna danced around me, knowing my partner or I would turn off the TV if watching it slowed her down. Then, suddenly, something brought us to a halt.

It’s Wednesday. Which means I’m half way done with my vacation and you’re half way to the weekend. I feel sad for me and happy for you. Either way, I think we can both appreciate Hope’s magnificent arm porn here. And her glutes are real consensus builders, too. Me, I’m all about finding common ground.

While I’m gone I shall, of course, be satiating your appetite with the lovely Vacation Vixens each day while I am away. Why? Because I care. History. Such a simple word filled with infinite implications. Sometimes it creeps past softly, barely noticed until one day we dust of big books and find it hidden within the pages. Other times it happens right before our eyes, big and brash and bolder than we ever expected. Yesterday was one of those days. Yesterday we heard 11 words from a sitting United States President we had never heard before. Yesterday President Barack Obama said “I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” Simple, clear, unmistakable. History. Now, we can get caught up in the fine print of President…

An amazing photo of San Francisco following the great earthquake of 1906.  At first, it looks like simply a beautiful panorama of a great city. Then you zoom in on any part of the photo you want and realize that the resolution is so good you're starting to see buildings torn in half, and entire lots razed to the ground.  It reminds me of images of Japan following the recent...

This is a straight news piece, the fascinating story of what a really thorough investigation of the Oklahoma City bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in 1995 actually turned up. Caitlin Ryan I don’t need to tell most readers that LGBT youth are at a higher risk than their non-LGBT peers for attempting suicide. Until today, however, no “Best Practices” have been identified or designated to help reduce vulnerability and risk among LGBT children, youth or adults. That has now changed. The national Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention, coordinated by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has designated a multi-lingual, multi-cultural series of family education booklets from the Family Acceptance…

Perspective, it's an interesting thing. Two days ago the citizens of North Carolina voted to ban gay marriages. The next day President Barack Obama becomes the first sitting President to say that he supports marriage equality. Some say the President came forward a day too late. We won't know if it would have made a difference or not. However, for some the perspective is a state lost. For others the perspective is a country won. What all agree on is that the President did a historic thing in coming out in favor of marriage equality. From some people's perspective his actions might even be…

Hi. My name is Justin Luke. I am a published author and a gay nightlife promoter in New York City. This is what I look like.  (Yes, the pink glasses are fake. As was that tattoo. As is that woman.)But, for one night, this past Sunday, May 13th, Mother's Day, I looked like this. And no, I'm not a career drag queen. And, after the experience of BECOMING one, I'm not too sure I'll ever do it again. But it was a spectacular experience, a checkmark on my Bucket List, and a teaching moment to be sure.HOW IT BEGANLast year I promoted my self-published novel, Gulliver Travels at NYC drag queen and…

Have you ever wanted to get into nightlife, gay or otherwise? I'd like to ask you why. I'm very, very curious. From my past 3+ years of experience in this colorful and blaring loud world, I think I've figured something out: the FOUR core reasons that people get involved in it. From what I can tell, EVERY person in nightlife is involved in it for TWO of these reasons. One is the CORE reason, and the other is the SECONDARY or SUPPORTING reason.Want to debate me, and add another? Leave a comment or write to me. News sites and media outlets across the country, including The New Civil Rights Movement, yesterday reported that boxer Manny Pacquiao said in an interview that gays “must be put to death,” quoting Leviticus 20:13 and other biblical scriptures in an interview with the Examiner’s Granville Ampong. We all have complicated relationships with faith. Last week when President Obama made the announcement that he supported marriage equality, the LGBT civil rights movement was electrified. Progressives across the country and others in favor of LGBT equality issues joined in a thunderous applause of solidarity. President Obama made history when he became the first sitting President of the United States to support marriage equality. What’s more, he cited his Christian faith as a motivating factor in his decision. The latter of which brings me to my question: can the LGBT community and…

The Wall Street Journal reports today that President Barack Obama has reversed his stand on gay marriage; in turn supporting it. Mr. Obama had been under intense pressure this week to lay out a clear stance on gay marriage after several of his top advisers endorsed it. Mr. Obama said he “personally” believes gays and lesbians should have the right to marry, a position he came to after several years of talking to friends and family and thinking about gay members of the military and of his staff who are raising children together in monogamous relationships. “I’ve been…

It got better! Obama's announcement, after refusing to take a clear stand for months, cheered gay rights groups who have long urged him to support gay marriage. It also highlights a clear divide with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who opposes gay marriage. Polling suggests the nation is evenly divided on the issue. "I have hesitated on gay…

This measure also scrapped civil unions for gay and straight couples. Pundits are saying this may also impact adoption rights, as well as health care and other benefits for same sex couples and their families. In addition to the basic rights involved, there was a spotlight on this one due to some celebrity wattage -- Bill Clinton campaigned against the amendment, Billy Graham in favour of it. This also gets extra attention as the media coverage grows…

Gay Prom Finally by Mark Segal My 1969 high-school prom came 43 years late — last week, actually. Like many people of my generation who knew they were gay in high school — unlike heterosexuals who looked forward to that night — I looked at the prom as a night of dread and oppression. For LGBT people, if we participated, we may have acted a part with a friend of the opposite sex, who might or might not have known who we really were. Or we simply skipped the event. Yes, no matter what your feelings on the prom, it is still a major part of the high-school experience. As a high-school…

I got an email asking me to petition a republican senator’s proposal to have a “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” style policy in the workplace to end workplace discrimination towards LGBTQIA community. How stupid can one senator be? DADT failed miserably in the military, so now you want to bring it to the offices? It’s like having a “War to End All Wars”; Let’s “Oppress to End All Oppression.” You are not helping anyone except your insecurities with that one, I’m afraid so. • Let me guess: Mitt Romney has gay friends

    [mkeegan]
    16 May 2012 | 12:00 pm
George W. Bush has gay friends. So does Sarah Palin. Amazingly, so does Rick Santorum. And let me guess: soon Mitt Romney will too. Every Republican politician seems to have at least one gay friend these days. That’s not too difficult: even if you tried, it would be hard to live and work in America without meeting at least one openly gay person you can get along with. Mitt Romney But for a right-wing politician having gay friends, shall we say, has benefits. These unnamed, unseen gay friends send a message that an anti-gay politician isn’t a hater. I mean, how can you hate your…

RICHMOND, Va. — GOP lawmakers in the Virginia House of Delegates, led by virulently anti-gay Del. Tracy Thorne-Begland, a Richmond prosecutor for the past 12 years, had been nominated for an open judgeship, but the nomination was quickly decried by the conservative group The Family Foundation and Marshall, who argued that Thorne-Begland’s sexual orientation would conflict with his ability to hold up the state’s constitution. President Barack Obama joined that handful on May 9, and I am grateful.

  • What You Should Put in a Domestic Partnership Agreement

    admin
    15 May 2012 | 1:00 pm
It’s important for gay couples to have domestic partnership agreement (also known as joint property agreements). These agreements help clarify who owns what and what would happen if you were to break up. The most common piece of property warranting a domestic partnership agreement is a house. The agreements are particularly important if domestic partners have unequal ownership in property. For example, one guy puts $50,000 down on the house and the other guy puts $0. The guy who put down $50,000 will want a domestic partnership agreement to show that he has more ownership in the house…

People supporting gay marriage often cite many benefits, but believe it or not, the best benefit of gay marriage would be the right to get divorced. With divorce, society has created this whole mechanism where you can go to court and say, ”Judge, we don’t like each other anymore, and we neeed help. We’ve been together 20 years, we’ve got all this stuff. Help us dissolve our relationship and divide up assets and debt.”Just like straight couples, most gay couples don’t get prenups or domestic partnership agreements. They say, “Oh, it’ll last forever and…

LGBT family law in Florida and elsewhere can be very complicated, and if you don’t ask the right questions in the initial consultation, you may not pick up on certain issues. Here are some of the things I ask about:Did They Get Married? Is the couple already married? Was the marriage in another jurisdiction? If so, educate them that their marriage is invalid. No benefits whatsoever. Gay marriage in Florida is prohibited, so same-sex couples in Florida that have been together a few years often wonder, “What is our next step?”Maybe you keep calling yourselves boyfriends or girlfriends. Or maybe you say partners. Or perhaps even you have a “commitment ceremony.”But what do you do if what you really want is to get married?Previous Advice: Don’t Do ItI usually advise couples against resorting to out-of-state gay marriage. While the emotional benefit is real, in Florida the legal benefits are not. It can also create a false sense of security,…

When I think about Orlando, Florida, visions of family holidays come to mind, but it turns out that Orlando is more than just theme parks and beautiful beaches (and deep-sea fishing with my Grandpa). There’s actually a grea, thriving LGBT scene there too. This corner of the Sunshine State has plenty of welcoming spots, nice bars and cool special events, so I’d say it’s well worth checking out if you’re looking for a fun and friendly holiday. Here are a few of the things I hope to check out in my next visit to Florida: Intimate or arty events If you’re looking for smaller, more…

North Carolina just passed a law which bans gay marriage, in addition to civil partnerships and other rights that are par for the course for my straight friends and family in America. With news of Joe Biden’s public support for equality this week and Obama’s continued stubbornness in claiming an “evolving” stance on E-Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y, I’m getting pretty tired of the way things are. Amy Davidson writes in an op-ed in The New Yorker: “There are families whose lives will now get worse. They, and we, have arrived at a moment when politicians—including the…

The single greatest fallacy that the Far Right uses against LGBTQ Civil Rights is the accusation that we are destroying the family, which could not be further from the truth. If anything Marriage Equality does more to protect the family than any other piece of legislation out there. Because we are already mothers and fathers and our families deserve equality. They deserve safety and legal protection and cultural support and acceptance. Their hate-filed fallacy has another dimension too. With it, they seek to silence all of us who are also sisters, and brothers, and daughters and sons. The Far…

Part of that is willing to see real change n the way we work for that election and the partnerships we form toward that end.

From The Guardian I’ve been challenged – on the fact that a State Surpreme Court determined that as PA permits single persons to adopt, they cannot use sexual orientation of the second parent to prohibit adoption. This was a landmark victory. Ten years ago. Ten years ago. And in the ensuing ten years, it has not been written into law. So here is what actually can happen – your…

Marriage Equality in PADon’t count on it. I know we are all pretty excited about the statements from Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama. As we should be. But I had a recent twitter discussion with someone who challenged me on the fact that Pennsylvania has enacted no statewide LGBT rights in legislative statute. No adoption rights.
